a co-worker and I were discussing this hypothetical match up recently. What is the general consensus (if there is one) among those on ESB?

Not even close. Jimmy Young is one of the more talented pure boxers of all time, and he was extremely competitive with top fighters in perhaps the best era in HW history. Ruiz was marginally competitive, using a combination of illegal and disreputable tactics, such as holding excessively and faking low blows, in a much lesser era.

You do the math. Young makes Ruiz look like the glorified clubfighter he is, and wins a wide UD. Presuming Don King's judges don't give him a gift decision like in the Golota fight.

My co-worker says Ruiz was a clubfighter as well. LOL.

:blood young wasn't that good. you make it sound as if he was some amazing boxer. he beat foreman while george was far removed from his prime.

I'm looking at Ruiz's record, and debating which fight was his best win. The second Holyfield fight, perhaps? Jimmy Young has debated losses against Ali and Ken Norton, which would surpass any victory that Ruiz has on his record.

    Young would've schooled Ruiz.

You also need to consider that virtually ANY "victory" Ruiz has over world class fighters is debatable. Excessive holding is against the rules of boxing, yet his connections with King allowed him to get away with it. And even then, he didn't clearly "win" most of these fights!

If the rules had been properly enforced against Ruiz, he would have been disqualified in virtually every fight he had above the journeyman level.

Jimmy Young was as hard to fight as he was to watch.
The same can be said for John Ruiz , but for different reasons.
Young schooled some real killers..Ron Lyle , George Foreman, and Earnie Shavers. Young did suffer some early career defeats, including a first round KO loss to Shavers, but improved and rebounded with great skills to earn a draw with Shavers in a rematch , and then box Earnies ears off in the rubber match.
I'm not sure Ruiz would be qualified to be a sparring partner for Lyle , Shavers or Foreman, much less a competitive opponent.
As for Ruiz, Young would have really gave The Quiet Man a lesson, might even have outclassed John enough to stop him.

Who's the ref? Ie will they allow grappling?

I think Jimmy Young in his prime would outpoint him over the distance. (sidenote met Jimmy in person at a Cooney fundraiser some years back, really nice although wasn't doing so great upstairs)

Would Chris Byrd be an accurate comparison?

    Always is.

I still love when Stoney called him Roy during the Jones fight.
