i cant believe jack johnson was stronger than lewis, the size difference and all. and because i dont know much of jack johnson and any pre-war fighters i couldnt give you a prediction. but without making a new poll out of this, wouldnt tyson destroy jack johnson? lewis being alot less agressive.
First off - IMO (and contrary to the rest of the planet) IMO the best Lennox Lewis was the Lewis of the Razor Ruddock fight so that is the Lewis I always use in terms of H2H - so we're talking 227lb Lewis not 250 - when Lewis was 250 he was overblown - unneccersarily heavy- the 227 Lewis was miles faster - Lewis never needed to be any heavier - I think it mad him less of a fighter and slower and heavier legged and led to him being prone to gassing at 227 Lewis was like a basketballer tall long and rangy yet fast and springy and atheletic with that arogance of youth that made him want to go after people - I think thats what set him apart back then. And then we're talking Johnson at, what, 205 or 210 - I'd probably take the Johnson who beat Burns for the title - he looked to me at that time to be in his finest shape - absolutely ripped - and again IMO he looked at his fastest in that one aswell - so for me the weight disaparity is not HUGE? And a fat and old anchient Johnson absolutely played with the 6'6" 230 lean Willard who IMO was naturally probably more a raw size and strength and endurance beast than Lewis ever was - that was Willard's bag - and he was renowned for it in an era made for it - so Johnson would no more of a problem with Lewis' size and physical attributes per sa than anyone else Lewis fought - fact is Lewis NEVER fought anyone remotely as good as Jack Johnson - unfortunately his signature wins came against arguably a Tyson-weary Ruddock, and aged Holyfield, an unstable Golota, a ghost of Mike Tyson, a way out of his depth Grant and possibly a slightly self deluded Rahman - and really he struggled a little bit with the likes of Frank Bruno and Ray Mercer and a relatively inexperienced Briggs - just think that Johnson is one of the pure boxing genius' of history and he would prove it against Lennox.
Lewis wins this quite easily IMO. Johnson, IMO, does not match up well H2H with any HW's bigger than him.
An interesting thesis but, inevitably ,as we age ,we tend to get heavier, boxers are not immune to this. Lewis was certainly impressive against Razor. Fast, lean, and mean. I think prime Lewis is a nightmare for just about any heavyweight champ, though I do not rank him in the top 5 of my ten . Stylistically ,and physically, he is a tremendous problem for his fellow champions to solve, imo.
hmmmm my h2h appreciation of marciano has dramatically decreased as of late so I can see Johnson overcoming him. Frazier and Dempsey however, can't see Jack winning.
I think he loses to all three with Dempsey being his best chance for victory. Marciano and Frazier just destroy him.
That's funny, because i think Marciano brutalises Johnson with his vicious volume-infighting, but Dempsey will at least struggle. I agree Seamus. :good
I used to rate rocky very highly H2H speaking but for some reason I now see him as thus for that kinda style tyson > frazier > dempsey > rocky not sure how this has happened, i'll have to watch him more.
I don't include Tyson in the "swarmer" category. To me, he was a "elusive composite puncher", who became a mere "slugger".
he seems to me the best bits of those who came before him with sharper reflexes, greater speed and better power.
