Hall-McDonnell Reaction

I just got round to watching this and it went exactly how I thought. Close in the early stages, with McDonnall taking over after the 6th. Very entertaining fight, and Jamie surprised me with his power as he seemed to stop Hall in his tracks late on. His tactics were spot on for me, the body shots took all the venom out of Hall's shots, and in the end it was Hall backing off. I had it 117-112, but most of the rounds were very close indeed so I son mind if the scores are closer.

I had McDonnell taking down the stretch. Hall started well and I thought his toughness and tenacity along with the good fundamental jab and right hand would get it for him. However once McD got in his stride he was a class above. McD stayed firing on all cylinders when Hall had shot his load for the night. McD was slipping, sliding and his offensive was simply more dynamic.

Jeffries looked technically better but strategically poor. Jeffries is fighting fully fledged bums who want to survive so they can build a career as a bum. Jeffries opponent kept ducking his head and clinching. He had no intention of fighting. He threw about 10 punches a round. For that effort, he should lose at least 50% of his pay. That would stop journeymen from putting forward such a poor effort. Jeffries is not good enough to pick apart a guy who doesn't want to fight. Many top fighters aren't good enough to stop guys who want to survive. Jeffries needs a live opponent who will give him opportunities to ply his trade. Poor match making but Jeffries doesn't look as dire as he once did.

Hall McD was a good 50-50 fight to open the season.

 

That is a slippery slope. You have guys like Zack Page who get by on spoiling and surviving, and have many losses but very few by knockout - except still throwing enough punches to steal a few odd rounds and even occasionally score an upset (as Page did against McBride, and Koeber, and a few other unbeaten prospects and declining contenders looking to use him as a foothold).

Where do you draw the line between who's earning their check and who isn't? It is a qualitative judgment and difficult to replicate consistently. I don't necessarily dislike the idea but it would be very difficult to implement.

 

Jeffries is frustrating to watch. He doesn't use his brain and that is reflecting in his fights. He should have been darting in - out but instead would lunge in with punches and allow himself to be tied up.

Jeffries needs to get his **** together fast before its to late for him.
