Never get bored of seeing mention of Vasquez-Marquez III. That trilogy, if it weren't for premature endings to the first two fights, would be secure in history as literally the greatest thing ever to happen in the sport. Some of us love pure boxing, some of us love fighting, some of us like a blend of both. Well, those three fights, and the third especially, cannot possibly fail to have boxing fans of all types with their jaws around their knees. Astonishing stuff. Sometimes in boxing, the most dramatic fights aren't those of the best quality, in terms of boxing skills, because they get slung through the window first. But that third fight...hell's ****ing teeth.

Anyhoo, some recent fights which I've only posted becasue in the process of cleaning up I found these cards on scraps of paper lying about :yep

    Cotto 116-113 Mosley

Fairly clear. Mosley's career, Margarito aside, has been markd by this timidness ever since the first Forrest fight. I dunno why. He looks like god himself during parts of the first DLH bout. What happeend to that Mosley?

Hopkins 114-111 Mercado, their first, held in Quito.

The composure that Hopkins took to this fight in a bullring in Ecuador was really a good indication of what a 46 year old Hopkins might be like. A robbery of moderate scale, though not as bad as the Pascal draw. Hopkins would have taken this anywher eelse on the planet, but with the knockdowns and the odd close round here and there...

    Mayweather 115-113 De La Hoya

Mayweather took the last four to grab this by a distance greater than the score suggests. A clinic of effective economy overcoming ineffective aggression, though against Pacquaio - if it happens - he will need to demonstrate more activity before the later rounds. That fight will be Pac KO or Mayweather UD. No *******s or *****s allowed in to ruin this thread, by the way.

    Young 116-110 Foreman

Dull until that incendiary 7th, which is surely one of the great rounds of all time. FOTY though? 1977 must have been a quiet year...Young was a fella who would have been a star if judges had looked more fondly upon him at a couple of stages in his career.

May very well now sit down to Yuh - De Marco seeing as the wife is at her sister's...

not had as much time to score fights on my list in detail as I've been caught up in a project I'm working on, but I took time out tonight to watch pea v oscar.

    Pea v Oscar

10-9 pea pretty much controls oscar this round staying out of range
9-10 better round by oscar who finds success and connects with pea throughout the round
10-9 pea threw more this land and osacr seemed to struggle with pea's offence whilst failing to land anything significant himself.
9-10 pea made oscar consistently miss but failed to land anything of his own throughout the round.
10-9 oscar tried to be more patient and gave pea timing leading to pea controlling the vast majority of the round behind his jab
10-9 very close round, oscar landed a big shot but seemed to get outpunched for the most part.
9-10 close round I thin oscars shots were slightly more effective
9-10 failry clear oscar round with some beautifully timed shots.
10-8 pea lands a counter and oscar touches down for a knockdown.
9-10 very close round with oscar seeming to time pea whenever he got close.
10-9 another very close round with oscar fighing on the outside but losing the jabbing contest.
9-10 another close round but oscar seemed the stronger finisher and too many of his shots got through for me to score it on pea's defence.

    114-113

My evaluation of pea has increased a fair bit and I've put him above Leonard (however I'm going to rewatch hagler-leonard next and if this time I score it Leonard he moves back above Pea) I mean the level of performances he gave over a decade (Mayweather - De La Hoya) are absolutely supreme. Truly one of the Elite greats of our sport.

    Hagler - Leonard

1: 9-10 quite a clear leonard round with hagler being totally ineffective
2: 9-10 another comfortable round for ray who controls from the outside against the orthodox hagler
3: 9-10 closer round but the better work is coming from ray
4: 9-10 same as the previous round, marvin seems content just plodding forward being tagged from the outside.
5: 10-9 hagler closes the distance much better this round and a couple of flashy combos aside did the much better work.
6: 9-10 much better by leonard who landed some cracking flush shots plus defended well with his head movement.
7: 10-9 good round by hagler who again closes the distance for most of the round beating ray on the inside against the ropes.
8: 10-9 much like the last round hagler bullies his way inside outpunching ray.
9: 9-10 very very good round but the more accurate and crisp punches were bouncing off hagler's chin for me.
10: 10-9 marvin out punches leonard in this round aside form one or two flashy combos but most of the round was won by marvin.
11: 9-10 hagler's punches didn't seem effective this round whereas ray still seemed crisp and sharp.
12: 9-10 good strong finish by ray who flurries and dances his way to winning the final round.

    112-116

I've the same score but with 9/10 reverse order to you'rs. 1st 7 rounds are a lock for 5/2 for leonard or 4/2/1 at least & the last 2 rounds are leonards. marvin blew it big time, threw it away in the first 4 rounds. But he looked so slow of punch & leaden of foot, hardly jabbed & just trundled foreward throwing telegraphed hooks which kept missing.

I've actually had the score wider:yep

Years ago i scored it close & even had marvin winning by 1 point & a draw, but in reality it's a gift victory handed on a plate by Hagler & i can't forgive him for that or show one ounce of sympathy. He & he alone blew it & what the **** was his corner doing about that dick head continued switch of stance to orthedox & back. He should have just jumped on the **** & exausted leonard.

If yer going to hand rounds over on a plate you'd think he'd have presented a bill. Leonard who'd have been out on his feet by 8 if Hagler had just piled into him early:deal

Eusebio Pedroza Vs Alfonso Zamora: Pedroza, future ATG 126lber, clearly gained a lot from his move two weightclasses north. His legs are super skinny here, and Zamora blasts him with a brutal overhand right-left hook combo that decimates him. Pedroza tries to get up but is wisely called off.

Savage stuff. Zamora is a genuine contender for hardest puncher P4P of all time, and this, something I've waited to get my hands on for yonks, reaffirms that. Knocks people around with shots like bullets ripping through rag dolls.

Sung Kil Moon, in his 2nd pro appearance against game Thau journeyman Singnoi Singkrungthon, who I'm pretty sure I've seen being beaten up by Khaokor Galaxy.

Buoyed by his opponent being open to every shot in the book (and more than willing to take them!) the Thai wings back even when in dire straits. But Moon is simply too good and too offensive, and throws the kitchen sink at him. As always with Moon, no finesse, but barbaric sounding punches and a rock solid chin. Brutal. Moon wins KO3.

Kuniaki Shibata L by KO3 Alfredo Escalara: Shibata, as always, doesn't care about his suspect chin and does some quality work in both round. In the 2nd, the future champion junior Lightweight lands a sweet uppercut on Shibata...WHO FIRES RIGHT BACK!!!! As always, Shibata, in the pocket, is a joy to watch, and even when badly stunned manages to take the edge of of Escaleras shots and try and fire back.

Now, here's where it gets interesting. As in some of his other fights, Shibata takes some massive shots before going down, but seems alright. I think I've finally cracked it: ashamed at being dropped, he decides to pretend he's sparked instead. I honestly think that's it. He's obviously badly hurt, but I guess he thinks it's better to look sparked than it is to have the 'shame' of being dropped in the first place. This also seems true in this fight:

:think Some of those Japs have some extreme ideas of valor!

I'm embarking on a bit of a Patterson mission at the moment because I feel he needs seriously reevaluating by myself.

watched his LHW fight with maxim, clear clear robbery. atleast 4 rounds up IMO.

I'm going to watch his fights with quarry and ellis hopefully tonight.

    Patterson v Quarry 1

9-10: good start by quarry who wins a close but clear round
7-10: dominant round by quarry as he drops floyd twice
10-9: patterson beating quarry to the punch now fighting much better
10-9: floyd again takes this round with better work
10-9: patterson again doing the better work mixing his shots up on the outside and inside.
10-9: more of the same as patterson does the more effective and accurate work.
10-8: patterson stops quarry's mini fight back with a fortunate kd.
10-9: patterson does the better work in a close round.
9-10: quarry rallies well to outbox floyd in this round.
10-9: patterson quick accurate shots win his the round.

    95-92

    Chitalada Vs Chang II

    Chitalada: 1; 4; 5; 10
    Chang: 2; 3; 6; 7; 8; 9; 11; 12 (10-8; point deduction)

    Chitalada 111-116 Chang

Chang had slowed considerably since his prime, and for the majority of the fight implements his intelligent and crafty mauling in-fighting style, stunting the range Chitalada posseses with his jab and implements through the 4th and 5th rounds. Chang opens up with big bursts in the third round, but is generally crafty throughout, showing off the sublime sneaky work on the inside that puts a smile on the face of any connoisseur of The Sweet Science.

In the 10th, Chitalada digs in and pulls a round back, but in the 11th, Old Chang brings out the old Chang and lets rip! Swarming all over the Thai champ with aplomb, I actually think Mercante misses a kd, a Chitalada knocks Chang over with a short right hand as he steams in off-balance. Nevertheless, it's not called and ruled a slip, and as Chang piles it on afterwards, it would only have been a 10-9 to the champ and not enough to swing it in his favour, so a pretty insignificant observation really.

Sot is deducted a point in the final round for throwing Chang to the ground. Unfair IMO, both had been rough throughout, with Changs using his octopus-like grabbing to make it look like he was being impeded (something he was always good at to slow the pace or to work on the inside with his free hand) and had pulled Sot down a few times himself. Chitalada didn't need to be punished IMO, and Chang wins the round so, 10-8.

Considering he was past his best and coming off the Chiquita loss, this was incredible stuff from Chang, beating the long-ranked no.1 Fly. IMO :D

Kuniaki Shibata Vs Ernesto Marcel (WBC Featherweight Championship)

Jap' ref' appears to take 2 points off Marcel in round 6 for use of the head (or rather Shibata being cut from it) which is insane and a crap WBC ruling that exists to this day! Marcel won the round, but 10-8 Shibata overall (10 point must system work the same with with deductions as it does knockdowns? I'm a bit vague on this to be honest). That is the case I'm sure as Marcel ups his game in the 7th, with Shibata managing to stay in it with his (dwindling in numbers) precise counters

9th round is an incredible display of technical trading. They trade sharp counters throughout, but Shibata just edged it for me by landing more. 12th round: AMAZING! Marcel all over Shibata for the first 2 1/2 minutes, as the brave Jap tries to land his left hook, he's all out of place. Late on however, he finds a home for it and fires back with both hands at a tiring Marcel, who somehow finds it within himself to beat Shibata around again as the bell goes to end the round.

The rest of the fight is bossed by Marcel, with Shibatas bursts of punches crawling to a halt for the most part of the championship rounds. He briefly comes alive again in the final round, but Marcel again pushes the fight, displays great ring generalship and piles on the offence.

    MARCEL: 3; 7; 8; 10; 11; 12; 13; 14; 15

    SHIBATA: 1; 2; 4; 5; 6 (+1); 9

    MARCEL 143-141 SHIBATA

Without the bull**** ruling, 145-140 to Marcel.

Ben Villaflor Vs Kuniaki Shibata 1

    VILLAFLOR: 5; 7; 10; 11; 12; 14;
    SHIBATA: 1; 2; 3; 4; 6; 8; 9; 13; 15

    Villaflor 141-144 Shibata

Villaflor gets off to a slow start, and for me for most of the fight Villaflors and though his jab is prodded or flicked out a lot it's Shibatas head movement that wins that battle for me. Shibata lands with the crisper shots throughout, Villaflor has his best successes when he gets in the Japs grill and puts shots together and tries to back Shibata up. Both men were content to be cagey from centre ring, an interesting enough clash to watch but nothing Earth-shattering.

A close fight, and difficult to score.

Villaflor obviously learned from this in time for their second outing, imposing his size and strength on Shibata from the get-go, roughing him and brutally sparking him.
