On that night, how did you see this one?

I re-watched it today and really, really enjoyed it.

If anything, Randall showed amazing physical and mental resolve to emerge from some punishing middle rounds and fight the way he did down the stretch.

    All comments welcome :bbb

A Little Respect, Please? : Chavez's Conqueror Frankie Randall Still Chafing at Boxing's Refusal to Acknowledge His Greatest Triumph
May 6, 1994 | TIM KAWAKAMI, TIMES STAFF WRITER
Frankie Randall emerged from a stint in jail, from boxing obscurity, from three decades of difficult life to knock down and defeat Julio Cesar Chavez three months ago, and what did it earn him? Deja Julio . Another fight against Chavez, another purse share smaller than Chavez's--$1 million vs. Chavez's $1.5 million--another round of questions about why he thinks he can beat Chavez, another opportunity to prove himself against somebody he has already defeated.

Randall on his best day was an amazing fighter, very underrated.

It was partially JLC getting older, and Randall peaking that night. A miniature Tyson/Douglas though JLC was far better that night then Tyson was on his.

    Randall deserves tons of credit.

Randall was a very good fighter and he beat a good version of Chavez. He is underrated imo. Great wins over Chavez, Coggi, Rosario. At his best he was as good as anyone, he just stuck around too long.

This. Chavez was still a very good fighter, but no longer great. Still, hell of a performance by Randall.

As Daniel Zaragoza was quoted as saying in one of Chavez' documentaries on his life, "after the Camacho fight, the hunger and dicipline went out the window."

Chavez was'nt in top shape for that first Randall fight.
If I remember correctly he lost most of the early rounds.
Was probably down 4-0 before you could bat and eye.

The only reason Chavez made a fight of it was because his undefeated streak was at stake, he fought on fumes the last rounds of the fight.

I though Chavez got right back into the fight in the mid rounds, and then lost his cool when Steele deducted two points on different occasions for low blows.

It was right after Steele deducted the 2nd point for a low blow that was actually on the beltline, that Chavez lost his cool and imo overextended himself trying to make up the difference for that low blow.
What resulted was him leaving himself open for that peach of a right Randall landed.

That right hand was "money".....Randall threw it with great leverage and it landed perfect.
When it landed, I had my doubts if Chavez could get up from it.
......Chavez was'nt "gutted" he was hurt.
Hurt and on fumes, because he had been fighting on fumes.
Not many champions in the history of the sport would have gotten up from that shot Randall landed, much less get up and try to fight off the cobwebs.

Listen, Im a huge Chavez fan, and I accept that Randall deserved it on the night.

In fact, I watched that fight a couple of years ago and got goosebumps seeing Randall celebrate after the decision went his way.
Randall was euphoric like he could'nt believe it.
In hindsight, that must have been one hell of an experience to slay a true undefeated legend like he did.
.......when I watch something like that, I imagine myself in his shoes and think, "wow, how sweet that must have felt."
Great win for Randall who had issues with drugs early in his career but had cleaned himself up in that time period before and after the Chavez fight.

In Chavez' behalf, it must be noted that he did'nt want to fight Randall in January (right after the holidays where Chavez was celebrating and not training properly)
....but Chavez who knew little about Randall, was convinced by Don King that Randall was a pushover, and King pushed the fight through.

As a fan of Chavez, the only regreat I have witnessing that fight is that Richard Steele played a roll in the outcome of it.
The point he deducted in the 11th round for a punche that was'nt low was the difference on the cards, and imo had Steele not taken that point away, Chavez would not have opened himself the way he did that led to the knockdown.

Randall still gets the credit from me however, no matter the shape Chavez was in, Randall was on his game that night.

he had chavez number...he kicked his ass in fight 2 as well.....but that crime of the century goes mostly unnoticed as chavez quit because of a very small cut and the fight went to the cards...and somehow he was ahead on the cards

First of all Chavez had lost at least twice to Taylor and Whitaker. To call him undefeated is a blind fan worshipping a false God. Chavez just like Duran overrated. I rate Marquez higher than both and hate the fact pernell Whitaker is rated lower than both on the P4P list.

Randall did a great job in that night. He sent Chavez to sit on the canvas and clearly beat him in that fight but the worst thing was the result was a majority decision instead of UD. One judge gave Chavez his decision. WTF!

BTW, Chavez wasn't faded. He was careless! Nobody knew Randall until that night.

    Randall is underrated
    Chavez is overrated
Besides JCC had already been schooled by Pernell a couple of years earlier, not mentioned getting saved by "Dick" Steele in the final 2 seconds of the 12th round against Meldrick

If anyone was saved that night it was Taylor by "Dick" Steele from getting permenant brain damage. Chavez TKO12 Taylor, deal with it, ***.

Anyway, I would say it was a mixed of both Chavez starting to fade, and Randall fighting an excellent fight. Although, Pea was the first to rightfully beat Chavez, Randall was the first to drop him. Randall deserves mad props, no matter what.
