How do you guys think a fight between these two plays out? Does Johnson have a shot? I personally feel like he would.. Thoughts?

It would be a very competitive match up. I can see Louis coming from behind to knock Jack out eventually though.

Was Louis agrressive enough to beat Johnson though... Louis did his fair share of counter punching and staying in the pocket... wouldn't that play directly into Johnson's hands? Johnson IMO would hold the physical edges in this fight.

Blackburn privately said that Jack would win, "because he was a mover." Johnson did accurately predict Schmeling's upset of Joe, perceiving the same susceptibilities Max detected. He would have had the stamina to take a decision over the championship distance, and not make the mistake of going for the kill which cost others like Conn in Louis I, and Walcott in Louis II.

    This is untrue.

Johnson almost certainly had no communication with Schmeling prior to the fight.

Of course everybody knew how Schmeling was going to do it in hindsight.

And versus Schmeling I, we do not have a prime Louis so that's easy argumentative pickings. I find no correlative in Johnson's heavyweight career of even a faint facsimile of Louis. Then again, we know Louis could be confused and outboxed, at least temporarily, by slicksters. If Jack had his best feet on (did he really ever display dazzling footwork at over 200 pounds) he could extend this affair until late but I still see Louis stopping him with wicked barrages that would be too much for any defensive minded heavyweight. It would be a great match.

1)can johnson prevent and disuade a stalking louis without opening up a bit?

2)if johnson opens up, does he get knocked out?

Johnson could beat Louis, but he would have to be at his absolute best, and even then, Joe Louis still has a good shot to beat him.Maybe if it was a twenty round fight.
