I am not sure if anyone here has ever had much to do with Chris Byrd, but i was wondering if anyone knows what sort of changes he made to his training regime when he dropped down to light heavyweight in his last fight.

I am extremely interested in this, did he run more, did he change diet, did he stop the weight training etc. I think this would make an interesting topic, as for chris to get down to such a weight at such a late stage in his career suggests taht he is probably really a natural light heavyweight (or at least he would have been if he trained the same way as the old timers).

Does anyone know for sure what his changes in training regime were?

he did an interview with HBO i believe where stated he simply started running more and the weight dropped off. He felt that all the weight was artifical when he was a heavy and he dropped 40 pounds just by regular running. i believe he also changed his diet and ate more naturally, with the weight loss coming far too quickly (6 weeks i believe)

He did an interview where he wore some old pants to show how big they used to be.

He said he just began to eat normally and do more running instead of weight and it happened naturally. Ofcourse the problem is he was shot.

But p4p, byrd is severely underrated imo.

Thanks for that. It is pretty amazing really.

I wonder which of the two different diets had the better modern nutrition:?

It is all very interesting, it seems that more running also stripped off the weight. This makes you wonder what todays fighters such as Adamek or arreola or others would weigh if they also ran and dieted like this, which is what the old timers did. Would Pacquai still be a flyweight etc Conversely, as i have said regularly with todays training and eating ideas would the likes of Fitz, Corbett and Dampsey be 220 to 240 lb "monsters".

It is a shame that Byrd didnt have a few more fights or do this a few years earlier. I think Lufcrazy was right, like Roy Jones Jr, he was finished by this time, and no amount of weight dropping or training would change this. I would love to know though (now that it is all over) how Byrd feels about the change in training, did it change his abilities in the ring substantially, could he still take a heavyweight punch, would his power still trouble heavyweights, was he weaker etc.

    Definitely.

His light heavyweight loss did enhance his record, in that it put his previous wins into perspective.

Byrd always referred to himself as a blown up super middleweight who had to eat like a mule and do serious weights.

I've no doubt he could have been an atg lightheavyweight. It's crazy, in an era that was ruled by lewis, vitali and wlad, byrd still found it in him to rise to the top.

And this is why u have lots of good memories from iron mike , like him lying relaxed on his back with his eyes closed after Lennox Lewis , stumbling backwards vs Holyfield , and waking up just too late to start rising against Douglas.
