Just announced on BJ Penn's facebook. I'm pretty saddened by this as a Big Nog fan, as I don't see this going very differently from their 1st fight. Mir's striking game is too sharp and powerful for the old, declined Nogueira. Still, I'll support him again anyway. :happy:happy :bbb:bbb
At least there's some good news tonight, cant see this going to differently than the 1st match though
Nog was flat footed, and backing up in a straight line against Mir in their first bout. Nogueria could drastically change things by circling instead. I thought most of you were boxing fans. You should know the detriment of backing up in a straight line against an opponent. Other than the footwork mistake, Nogueira has superior boxing to Mir. If Nog circles, don't be surprised to see him win by knock out.
No, Nog isn't. Mir has good athleticism, has above average power, but still isn't a world class striker. Retreating in a straight line against Mir is almost certain doom, but Nogueira's chances increase significantly just by moving in a circle. This will not guarantee Nog's victory, as his reflexes have diminished. Mir has exceptional power for mma, and all it takes is one of his punches to get the legs rubbery.
I think the problem for Nog is he will be caught flat footed when he throws and Mir loves to step in and counter. He's obviously not a world class striker, but he does this relatively well Even BS was relatively successful when he pressed forward against Nog, albeit very briefly
This is what I was thinking. However, I think Nog's legs are too shot to employ any useful lateral movement and he'll end up getting outquicked. Mir is a shitty boxer but his speed and athleticism figure to make him the favorite.
I don't think it would drastically change things Rek. I think it'd perhaps delay the inevitable a few minutes longer is all. Maybe I overrate Mir as I always seem to think more of his abilities than people on here, but I think he can be pretty clinical at times, and he mixes it up better than most heavyweights. With a 20lbs weight advantage over Nog, younger, fresher, faster, more athletic, better power, and so on, I just don't see Nog winning this. Then again, I thought he'd lose to Schaub!!
Whether it could change things now, maybe not. I really think this lack of footwork is what won this fight for Mir when they met. Nogueira never was anything like Machinda, but he once circled his opponents. Nogueira was almost back to PRIDE days when he fought Couture, when compare to his performance against Mir. The right Schaub caught Nog with would have much more impact if it were thrown by Mir. I'm not getting my hopes up. I just think Nog can make a better fight of it if he follows a better game plan than in their first encounter.
I really want to thank you for not mentioning Nog's chin. Obviously, glass or not, Mir can crack it. This fight will boil down to whether or not Mir can land a fight ending shot. Nog's legs may be better than they were in their first encounter, but Nog may never again perform as well as he did against Couture. As you said, Nog may no longer have the legs. Nog's footwork may very well be the key to this fight.
