Thoughts on Gamboa & Canelo

1)Gamboa has the most natural talent i've seen in years. Lack of fundamentals limits his long term potential

2)Canelo has a great grasp of basics but poor head movement and lacks one punch power. I see him making top 10 p4p for good service but never beating the elite.

 

I think Gamboa's natural athleticsim/power combo makes him a special fighter who may or may not build up a significant legacy but I don't think Canelo will ever truly be "special", even though he's good. Of course, he's special compared to your average fighter, but historically speaking, he will likely be a footnote, imo. Gamboa has a chance at something more, whether it pans out or not.

well done. still i'm looking at the rhodes fight and he hit that ****er with EVERYTHING. TKO aside, he never looked in serious trouble

Gamboa's legit. I have high hopes. I don't think its a lack of fundamentals that will limit any long term success (he's one of the most accomplished amateur boxers of all time, after all), but more his age. The guy's already 29. He only has a few more years left before his freakish athleticism begins to fade.


Canelo's a solid but mostly unspectacular fighter IMO. At best, his career will fold out like Cotto's.

 

As it's looking, even that's a pretty big ask and as much as I love Cotto, it's not like he's an ATG himself. The ceiling isn't that high for Canelo, I bet. Gamboa is one of my favorite guys now. I'll try not to be biased but I think one day in the next couple years, he'll at least be a top five p4p fighter-of his time. I'm picturing Mayweather, Pacquiao, Marquez and Martinez will be retired, and Donaire, Gamboa, Ward, Khan and Gonzalez will fill out the top five.

 

I agree Jorodz.......Ponce De Leon is his biggest test as a professional in my opinion, I´m looking forward to this fight, PDL is crude but can hit for real......

 

I would pick Salido over PDL

Ok, but PDL is a heavier puncher than Salido.......and Gamboa was knocked down before, he doesn´t have a good defense....I think this is a more dangerous fight for him.....more dangerous than Salido, in my view..

 

i think gamboa is a freak athlete and an outstanding boxing talent.the fastest fighter in the sport imo no dought.i see him going on to be truly great as long as his team doesnt try to change him to much,he is what he is and thats a wrecking machine,dont try to make the guy a master boxer.
canelo is more of a mystery though.i know guys who are sold on him hook line and sinker already,i however am not.he is good but needs improvement but the guys only 20 too.i think his team is doing the right thing by bringing him up slowly but some time soon he will have to fight a p4p fighter or at least a margarito or cotto type and then we will know exactly what canelos holding.

 

Gamboa has speed, but he will get knocked out by Donaire if he is stupid enough to fight him.....................Canelo is still a work in progress, but he has lots of potential................

 

Gamboa is the closest thing to RJJ that we will probably every see and we all saw what happened when Roy lost a half a step. At a lighter weight the decline would be even faster and he would burn out in the night a lot faster than roy. Gamboa has to become a master boxer to achieve any type of longevity and become a ATG. His style over the last few fights have been a bit of a transformation. he is learning the science of the sport, if can learn half of what bhop, pbf or toney knows he could be unstoppable and rank very high as an ATG

I think the Canelo= Cotto assessment is a good one, Mid to low p4p status.

 

I agree about Gamboa. Let's wait and see how long Gamboa can fight in his prime. Most of the Cuban defectors can fight strongly until their mid 30's, then it's downhill fast after that. It's mainly because they start with around 300+ amateur bouts and if you do your math that totals around 1200 rounds before their pro debut!

But since Gamboa is so naturally gifted and is an spectacular athlete, maybe he can fight strongly until his late 30's. That will be great, if he can hit at least 50 pro wins and retire undefeated or with maybe 1-2 loses and becomes World Champion at 126 ( already done ), 130, 135 and 140lbs, he is going straight to the Hall of Fame and will be considered an all time great, way better than Casamayor. Gamboa will definitely become Cuba's best pro boxer since the good old Gavilans, Chocolates and Napoles! :good

Canelo is overrated, period.

 

Gamboa's ability is ****in monstrous. Can do anything he want in the ring as far as im concerned. Chris John is a must or Juanma after the De Leon fight.

I have high hopes for Alvarez. Hopefully next year we will see him face some real acid tests.
