stuggle with southpaws? I've heard a lot of people claim that Mayweather struggles with southpaws. However, he's about to fight a southpaw and many are claiming that Ortiz is tailor made for Mayweather and is a cherry picked opponent. Both views seem at odds with one another as it wouldn't make since for a guy to struggle with lefites and at the same time cherry pick a lefty that is supposedly tailor made for him. So does he really have trouble with southpaws or is that theory overblown?
No What can be challenging for him are guys with good defense. Castillo, Oscar with his parrying skills, and Zab (who was trying to be slick and managed to stay defensive minded). Corley was the other game lefty Floyd fought, he got beat bad and didn't win a single round.
his style is optimal against orthodox fighters because he uses his shoulder to block/perry the power right hands, but with a southpaw, a straight left down the middle can land pretty easily.
to be fair he doesn't always use his shoulder roll against lefties and has the best right hand in the business, the number one punch to kill southpaws Who else can triple and quad up on their lead straight right?
the evidence say no, he's has beaten world class south paw with little or no issues.. but people will always look at floyd fight with Corley and say floyd has problem with south paws, even though floyd dominated the whole fight before getting stun. Now with that being said, it is Floyd Sr who states floyd has problem with south paws, even though he has not trained Floyd in almost 20 years.
Donaire fails to mention that Mayweather has easily defeated every southpaw he's faced. His recollection of the Corely fight seems off as well. Corely didn't stun him with a left hand. It was a right hook counter shot that hit Maywether when he was squared up. Ironically, the guy that really shook him with a straight shot when he was using that shoulder roll defene was Mosley and that was with a right hand.
This is really dumb video.. Fan and hater alike seem to think the the shoulder roll is Floyd only defense, even though he has shown he can use his legs, parry,slip and block punches. Floyd is very good at mixing up his defense and using deferent trick.. The more fighter buy into floyd only defense is the should roll, the less chance they have of beating him. Mosley at one point went on record as how to beat floyd's defense, but after landing that one right hand against floyd, he never figure out floyd's defense after that right hand.
that question will be settled Sept 17th. Not only a Southpaw but a young strong WW who throws power shots at 50 a clip per round and really doesn't give a ****. Full respect if Floyd shuts this kid out. It will really tell a lot about Floyd. If he is who he is Ortiz should be landing at under 20%.
Everyone has trouble with southpaws, other southpaws have trouble with southpaws. Mayweather is known as a slow starter and Judah who is a fast starter landed a good punch and got Mayweather's glove to touch the ground. Which got overblown.
Ortiz will be his toughest Southpaw to date due the volume of power punches + his size and youth @ 147 pounds. Judah and Corrley should not have lasted 4 rounds with a Floyd Mayweather but the southpaw stance allowed them their moments as some of Floyd's bag of tricks could not be used.
