Who here feels "Holy-Holmes" of '92 was good tactically speaking, or just boring?

    Folks,

I'm gearing up for "Klit-Adamek" this weekend by going over some old tapes with big heavyweight title fights from the past... Right now I have "Holy-Holmes" from 1992 Las Vegas rolling... All in all, I admired the fight on the whole, but, to a degree I felt it was too passive / tactical in several rds.... I think it was mainly due to the styles didn't mesh all that well, though I saw that on paper beforehand...

Question is, who enjoyed "Holy-Holmes" when it occurred back in 1992 and who thought it was simply a dud???

One of my favorites. I watch this at least once a year. Holmes is tied with Riddick Bowe as my favorite fighter, so I might be biased. But anyway, a comeback Holmes was always great to watch, and in some ways, he was a lot better in his comeback than he was when he held the title. At least imo he was.

    Charles,

Well, Holmes of 1992 and at 233 pounds was not as fleet-footed or as active with his combinations as he was a decade earlier in 1982 at 212 pounds when he was schooling Gerry Cooney, but he did have a much better attitude overall during his 1990s comeback compared to his 1980s bitterness.....

I went to Holmes' 1992 Vegas public workout just days before his challenge to Holy occurred and Holmes had former contender David Bey there in camp as a sparring partner.......I took a few good pics of the scene.......

And Holmes was a lot more crafty/cagey in his comeback. His ring generalship was very impressive. That must have been an awesome thing to see his public workout. I need to meet Holmes one day, it is on my bucket list, haha.

I thought the fight was alright.

Holmes showed his craftiness, having some success in spots off the ropes, and did well, all things considered. Holyfield showed that nice double jab of his.

at that point Evander was too quick and did everything better. Larry had a right hand but nothing else really.

I also thought that Holmes fought the wrong type of fight and was nearly aggressive enough.

Both are ring generals who capitalize on their opponents mistakes.... That's why the fight was tame / passive in many rds..... Holmes tried hard to lure Holy in by laying on the ropes, as he did against Mercer, but Holy is miles ahead of Mercer in ring smarts and ability....

    NOTE:

Holmes blew some chunks at the final bell........ I never seen that before in a big fight.....

I was excited for the Holyfield/Holmes fight. I watched Holmes school Ray Mercer and was thinking that Holmes just might be able to pull the upset against Evander. But I was disappointed as the fight unfolded. Holmes acted like he didn't want to win the heavyweight championship. He fought Ken Norton with a torn bicep and endured 15 grueling rounds to take the title. Holmes always showed a lot of heart and determination during his reign, but against Evander, Holmes acted like all he had to do was show up, throw a few punches here and there, and then go home!

And the fight itself was not fought at a breakneck speed. It wasn't like Holyfield was pressuring and stalking Holmes like Tyson did to him in '88. The fight was fought at a pace that should have allowed Holmes to be more active and aggressive. In '95 when Holmes fought McCall, Holmes fought with much more grit and aggression than he did against Evander.

And all that laying on the ropes stuff was no good. Where was Holmes' jab? Whenever Holmes fought Holyfield in the center of the ring, he was outboxed, outjabbed, and outclassed. I think a lot of that had to with conditioning; I never got the impression that Holmes busted his a** during training.

Oh well, the fight was ok, but I was disappointed.

I am a sucker for all things Holmes, particularly a comebacking Holmes! I enjoyed Holy v Holmes particularly the first half when it was reasonably competetive!
Funny that you raise this! Over the last few weeks I have been reviewing my comebacking Holmes dvd collection and watched this along with one of my personal fave, Holmes v Greer! What a forgotten gem! It went down in Honolulu! Rounds 2 and 3 were chaotic with bombs being traded then it peaks in Round 4 when Larry gets the shits after talkng some behind the head shots from Greer and brutally KO's him! Love it! Re-visit this baby!

You would edig it! I have a reasonable copy on DVD! It was screened on some dodgy network called PRIME! The KO is priceless with Larry walking Greer nto a corner then absolutely teeing off on him! Sweet! Send me a private message if you would like a copy and I'll send one your way!

An underrated performance by Holmes. He was very competitive in this fight.
