I think your just letting the fact he is the poster boy cloud your judgment to be honest. happens with every boxer put in that position.

Bollocks its usually the other way round he gets talked up by people!

Im playing down the poster boy beacause he is the poster boy:huh

The thing is in the amateurs a year can be a long time people can come from nowhere or from being average hopes (Degale) to gold meddalists :good

I saw Ogogo beat the Indian favourite at the Commonwealths so he certainly has bottle.

Lawrence Osueke has been called up for the GB squad at light-heavyweight so I'd imagine he will be in with a shout for upcoming tournaments.

Danny Phillips has been re-instated into the squad as well at 64kg but I think he will be one for future tournaments.

Last I heard Baister had the place for the world championships ahead of Vallily but he was knocked out in a tournament last week which may have resulted in a switch.

I just wish they would have more GB tournaments between the lads before major tournaments.

    Ireland

    49kg Paddy Barnes
    52kg Micheal Conlon
    56kg John Joe Nevin
    60kg David Oliver Joyce
    64kg Ray Moylette
    69kg Roy Sheehan
    75kg Darren O Neill
    81kg Joe Ward
    91kg Kenneth Egan
    91+kg Con Sheehan

Very good squad, most of these lads have the potential to qualify. the only weak point is Roy Sheehan at 69kg, Willie Mclaughlin is viewed as the better boxer, but Sheehan won the box off for the place at the worlds. Probably one of Irelands strongest ever teams actually.

I think Willie got injured at the Euros and wasnt 100%. Thats the only reason I can see as to why they didnt give him a box off with Sheahan as he has beaten the last 2 winners of the Euros in the last year, he beat both Backsai (last years winner) and Evans in multi-nations and is one of the top at 69kg imo, although Sheahan seems to be flying himself after winning the box-offs and it looks like he is back to his best in a long time.

Is it the quarters that guarantee a place in the olympics? If so i reckon most if not all of our squad have a great chance of qualifying. Draw permitting of course.
