Hey everyone, not really got properly into my boxing until last few years, and even then its mostly UK / World scene. I was wondering if someone could comment on oscar dela hoya's resume before 2000, and why he is considered a great, and his record since when the only marque win I can see is Gatti. otherwise he lost to : Mosley x2, Hopkins, FMJ, Pac. Now I know these are top quality fighters and not doubting that, just I accept im not the most knowledgeable in terms of fighters names / reputations so was wondering if someone could shed some light on his legacy. Cheers
He'll be remembered more for his promotional company than his boxing. As an Oscar fan I feel that he is short changed whenever they mention the most influential figures in boxing history and leave him out. He holds the PPV record and is the only boxer to make it into the big time with promoting.
I didnt forget, as I explained im not aware, which imo isnt a problem if i admit it openly and dont claim knowledge, and ask to be enlightened. And fair enough
He clearly got the better of a peak Trinidad, but was robbed. He destroyed a faded but still highly rated Julio Cesar Chavez twice, edged close, disputable decisions against the excellent Ike Quartey and the faded ATG Pernell Whitaker. He also beat a string of very solid, contender-type fighters, such as Vargas, Carr, Campas, G. Hernandez, Gonzales, Reluas, Molina, Leija, Castillejo, etc. He was a top fighter from 130-154. He's a genuinely great fighter. Certainly not top 50 all time, but greater than guys like Barrera, Morales, and Marquez
Good post. You will not see anyone come close to having the calibre of a resume Oscar has for a very, very long time.
Good post... Good call on the "not top 50 all time" line. He is short changed in terms of influence on the game. Promotional, financially, and fighting, he is underrated.
Not he did not accoplish more. Like I said he lost almost all his big fights so how does that comapre to Floyd???
After recently watching De La Hoya vs. Mayweather Jr, Max Kellerman probably described it best.. 'De La Hoya has the chance to beat an A fighter in their prime.. something he has never done' Taking nothing away from De La Hoya, he fought the best, looking through his resume, you can't argue, he's taken on the best, possibly sans Winky Wright and Kostya Tszyu, impressive. Can you say the above about Mayweather? Respect is due.
Oscar is not a top fighter in my book, not elite I should say. Never beat an elite fighter and made his name off his gold medal beating way past prime big names and Tito leftovers. I scratch that, he did beat Tito, but that is pretty weak resume with Tito being your only win.
Gold medalist, more championship fights, more div. titles, PPV record holder, succesful promoter, better victories , etc, etc. it's all in the books son. If you choose to deny it it's just a bad reflection on you. Only thing FLoyd has over DLH is his 0 and we all know why he has that 0. The following might further explain why DLH had some loses and FLoyd is undefeated: With the possible exception of RJJr, DLH fought every #1 PFPder of his era and most of them were in their prime. FLoyd fought 2(a past prime DLH and a shot SSM)
