Jim is okay.. I dont really listen to what commentators say during a fight anyway, usually to focused on the fight. He gives good commentating sometimes. The stupidity in boxing commentating is nowhere near the stupidty of NFL commentating on a weekly basis. I tend to ignore it.

I'm going to echo what a lot of people have said: Lampley is a good play by play man, a mediocre to poor boxing historian, and mediocre to fair in terms of his general knowledge of the game.

He's also always been prone to false calls (like saying that someone got hit with a big shot when they actually blocked it) or getting too excited and carried away in the moment. (Remember when he said Chavez looked like he was going to go down against Taylor? Um... sure, Jim, sure)

I too, felt hazy when I heard that line about LaStarza from Lamps, but he still gets my respect as a host and I'm used to hearing him call the fights.... Lamps took over for the average, yet well spoken Barry Tompkins in 1989.... If memory serves me correctly, Lamps' first HBO call was the '89 "Chavez-Mayweather" title fight for the WBC 140 title...

Bob Papa will eventually get Lamps' full-time job in another few years, but Papa seems to me like a "B" rated version of Lamps anyway.... So I really don't knock it......

Poor Larry Merchant is age 79 and senile as all hell, but, he's a legend at HBO... Mad Max Kellerman is taking over, but he ain't the presence of Merchant....

Gus Johnson sucks balls and seems gay as the host of Showtime.... Showtime could've done a better job than giving Johnson the shot at the mic up front.... Christ, WTF is Al Albert doing nowadays since the USA net. cancelled its weekly Tuesday Night Mismatches a decade + ago??? Al Bernstein is fine....

Lampley has been arrested for abuse of his gf.
There was the craziness with Marv Albert.

It is an absolute prerequisite for an American sportscaster to be guilty of spousal or gf abuse.

This is where they get their boxing knowledge from.

**** it..... Everybody who's ever made a few bucks has skeletons' of some kind in their closet hiding out.... I don't trust a guy who claims he doesn't smoke, drink or chase broads around town... The media blows so much crap outta proportion....

The HBO team are too lacking in on the job experience, you get far more insight from Jones, Tarver, Foreman or Steward because they actually know what to look for and what a fighter should be doing in the ring. You do need media people/presenter types too, but it's lacking balance and insight

    Lets take a closer look,

Walcott was on a 12 fight win streak from 1945 once he started getting sufficient training and food until he lost a disputed decision to the great Elmer Ray and disputed SD to Joey Maxim, Walcott went on to beat Maxim 2 X and then Beat Elmer Ray in the rematch. Some of the other fights JJW beat during this time were Curtis Sheppard,Joe Baski 45-4-3, Killer puncher Tommy Gomez 52-4-1 KO3, Lee-Q Murry,Lee Oma,

Walcott then went on to Fight Joe Louis in 1947 he had Louis down 2X and most felt he won that fight in the rematch Walcott dropped Louis again to get caught later in the fight after an brisk exchange in a 6-piece Joe Louis combo

Walcott then lost to the Great Ezz Charles in a close fight but went on to KO Ollie Taberg,KO the Great Harold Johnson,KO3 Johnny Shkor ko1 and dominated the 6"6 Hein Ten Hoff in 1951 and 1952 he KO'd Ezzard Charles and won a UD in the rematch in 1952 and then went on to fight Rocky Marciano in one of the ATG battles ever

As far as Ezzard Charles he was on a 9-fight win streak after his loss to Layne but beat Layne in the rematch and also KO'd Bernie Reynolds beat Jimmy Bivins,Ceaser Brion, and Billy Gilliam (who Beat Valdes the fight after Charles) the loss against Johnson was disputed and Valdez would not rematch Charles after there fight despite Charles chasing him for a rematch. Charles had a explosive Ko over Coley Wallace and a explosive KO in2 over Bob Satterfield (who went on to dominate Valdez) and Charles fought gallantly and it was one of his best performances vs Marciano in fight 1 ( Charles was 2 years older than Marciano)

Moore was on his greatest win streak ever and only had 2 losses in his last 50 fights(one was a DQ) and the other was a disputed SD to Harold Johnson who he beat 3 times after the last being a KO, Moore also went on to KO some of the hardest hitting Heavyweight and KO #1 contender Bob Baker and Beat Nino Valdez 2 X not to mention Moore Ko'd Burt Whitehurst 2X(Whitehurst went 10 with Sonny Liston 2X) Clarence Henry,Alberto Lovell,Joey Maxim,Jimmy Slade,Abel Cestic,Jimmy Bivens

as far as the Patterson loss if was about a 14 months after Marciano but lets not forget the brutal beating that Moore took in the Marciano fight hitting the deck multiple times and it was a Brutal beating very hard to come back from and Patterson was fast and hard punching and no slouch despite the fact most feel (including Patterson's manager Cus D'mato that Floyd would have zero chance vs Marciano...Moore was brutalized vs Marciano and not sure 14 months was enough of a rest for Moore

Joe Louis was past his best but was still formidable and like you said his record was 69-2 with 55 KO's when he faced Marciano

Nice post. Only on a boxing forum like this could one comment from a guy be used as the definitive proof that he sucks as an announcer.

Must be a slow month for topics.
