Some good analysis here, makes nice change from some of the **** that's been clogging up the forum over the last few days. One thing that isn't being talked about enough here is the punch output of Nick Diaz, which is one of the main reasons he has a reputation as one of MMA's top boxers. Stoo and MM have broken down his style convincingly, but in this fight the judges are going to see a lot of leather being thrown one way. Penn needs to land a few of those hard counter punches early, because if Diaz can get into his groove, coming forward aggressively and constantly making contact with the slap-jab, he'll win rounds off workrate and control.

I don't think workrate will play a part until maybe the 3rd. By that I mean that BJ's significant speed advantage along with his tight accurate punches will stereo Nick from overwhelming him. Nick may be "crazy" and "a real fighter" but nobody will continue to walk directly into hard, sharp counters with mma gloves. Diego Sanchez is a tough son of a ***** and a true "fighter" also and BJ slowed him down real quick. How I see Diaz being able to get to Penn is by grappling with him the first couple of rounds. Pushing him and making him work the whole 10 minutes....then if he can survive w BJ on the ground that long (big "if" because penn will have top position for sure)...then try and overwhelm a tired Penn with strikes in the 3rd.
The thing is, Penn is a far superior wrestler and better at BJJ to boot, so I doubt he'll overwork himself even if he does end up being forced to grapple.
Yeah, I agree. I don't think what I wrote is likely, only Diaz's best chance. I just can't imagine Diaz pushing the pace on the feet against Penn. Penn is too sharp.
Just thinking back Noon was beating the **** out of Diaz early in the stand up in their fight. Against someone with actual technique and ability I think Diaz will get picked apart. The only way I seen him winning this is if it was a 5 rounder and its not.
OMG, I have been owned again, showing a fatigued Diaz throwing punches against fresh Penn, oh how silly of me to suggest that Nick may be an effective boxer for MMA standards despite him getting sloppy when fatigued
How do you know that? And even if he doesn't hit with as much "power" as him, he hits friggin hard, throws quick and accurate and drops a helluva lot of people with his shots.
