I take it back, my next modus operandi will be to heavily revise both Greb and Chang, which re frankly pathetic 'efforts'. Greb will be a complete overhaul. Chang will be more comprehensive.
Jesus ''El Matador'' Chavez birth date 1972-11-12 / age 38 division lightweight stance orthodox height 5′ 5″ / 165cm reach 65″ / 165cm alias El Matador country Mexico residence Austin, Texas, United States birth place Delicias, Chihuahua, Mexico birth name Jesús Gabriel Sandoval Chávez This content is protected + This content is protected + drawn 0 = 52 rounds boxed 345 KO% 57.69 Jesus Gabriel Sandovel Chavez was born 12th November ’72 and was one of four Siblings. His father worked 12 hard hours a day working the mines in the border town Delicias, Chihuahua, Mexico. A river only 6 miles wide separated this town to the states which is where his wanted to move his family to help provide a better life. He swan the river more than a dozen times before he managed to successfully enter the USA and went and set up home in Chicago leaving his family behind until he had enough money to fly them over. Gabriel Sandovel (as he was known then) joined his father in his early teens in West Side, Chicago, one of America’s toughest ‘Ghetto’s’. The neighbourhood was full of Hispanic and Polish Immigrants, around 75% being illegal. With the streets being ridden with gangs his father took him to “El Matador” gym to help keep his son from joining a gang. Gabriel was top student and showed even more promise as a boxer which didn’t go un-noticed and wasn’t long before he was dodging boxing class’s and hanging with the neighbourhood ‘tough’s’ which proved to be his downfall. One day when he walking home from school he was approached by 2 hoods’ who asked him to join them on an armed robbery on a grocery store which netted him $3,200 and a 7 ½ prison sentence, despite an early guilty plea. A highly touted amateur, Gabriel had 95-5 record and was a Chicago Golden Gloves Champ and if it wasn’t for his sentence was almost certain to represent Mexico in the 92 Olympic Games. A real shame as that would have had his pro career off to flyer rather than spending the next 4 years in Cook County Jail, Illinois River Correctional Centre and the dreaded Statesville, which had 1 of the worst reputations for violence in America. Anyway, four years later Gabriel was released and with him being an illegal immigrant he was deported to Mexico, although his stay wouldn’t be long and he snuck back into the country after a few months where after a brief spell back in Chicago he moved to Austin, Texas to stop him falling back into trouble and more importantly pursue his boxing career. His old trainer put him in touch with Richard Lord and weighing 170lb’s he strolled into the gym andkick started his career. In 1994 and under new name Jesus Chavez had his pro debut against Texas golden boy Lewis Wood. Wood was a local sports celebrity after losing to none other than Oscar De La Hoya in the last qualifying round for the Olympics. It was Woods 2nd pro fight and Chavez was just ment to be fodder to make him look good but what they didn’t know was under a different name Chavez had a very successful amateur career. It was a close hard battle which Chavez won on PTS over 4. He later won the vacant NABF against Javier Jauregui on points. He defended that title 6 times before the INS (some immigration investigating people :x) caught up with him and sent him back to Mexico. This was just after coming off a solid win against former IBF champ Troy Dorsey. Chavez career was on hold at the worse possible time as he had worked his way to the WBC No.1 contender for Floyd Mayweather JR belt. His promoters at the time sent him to Future H.O.F. trainer Nacho Beristain. Chavez wasn’t thought of very highly while plying his trade in Mexico. The natives referred to him as a ‘Gringo’ and a ‘Northerner’. This was soon to change though as he jumped through the ropes with then Mexican champ and Mexico City Favourite Julio Alveraz. The was re-scheduled once because Chavez was poisoned with some weird Mexican home brew :yep. Chavez won the fight on a SD but more importantly he won over the people of Mexico showing true heart and courage. Chavez spent 4 years in Mexico before to got his green card and allowed back in the states but while he was there he also used to fly up to Tijuana to as for a while he promoted and managed by Fernando Beltran who let him use his gym and was trained by Romulo Quirarte, which Chavez felt an honour as he was in Mexican Great Julio Cesar Chavez corner for his glory days. The gym was buzzing at time with Manuel Medina, Jose Luis Castillo, heavyweight prospect Ernesto Quirarte, ‘Yory Boy’ Campas and Erik Morales, who is later to Fight Jesus Chavez. His first fight back in the country, with the Mayweather fight on the horizon was Tommy ‘boom boom’ Johnson. Chavez forced him to retire on his stool after 8. Not bad considering Naz had stopped him in 8 2 years earlier. Now being promoted by Top Rank they set the long awaited Mayweather fight up, they pressured Chavez to train with Ronnie Shields with Richard Lord 2nd’s. Not sure if many of you know this but this fight was actually cancelled because mayweather had a toothache. Anyway, once down to business Chavez put up a great fight, pushing mayweather back against the ropes constantly and landing with success, although you can see Mayweather showing his class landing some viscous uppercuts which led to Ronnie Shields pulling his charge out at the end of the ninth. Chavez and Richard Lord where both gobsmacked to say the least, The judges had mayweather just in front but some ringside observers (George Foreman was 1) had chavez 1 point ahead. He was still in this fight and had cut mayweather on both eyes, he certainly done himself justice, just a shame a trainer who hardly knew had to pull him when he said he was fine to continue. Never ming though, his time was soon to come. (Flea, u know much of this man:think) Their fight ain’t on youtube so can’t really comment on the fight. He won a Wide points win. Former Mayweather, Cotto, Corrales victim ( and our very own Michel Gomez, who was blitzed in 2) ****** Juuko was ment to be his first defence, money in the bank type of fight but Chavez ripped his shoulder tendon and needed surgery. Arum was furious with this and threatened to have him stripped (yes, his own fighter) as he was grooming Mexican superstar Erik Morlaes and forced the fight to take place so Morales could become only the 2nd Mexican fighter to hold world title in 3 different divisions. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2YMF9u_9_k[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_CTD5apkBk&feature=related[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRP0rXLoyWU&feature=related[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5E2hG_Tv9k&feature=related[/ame] What a warrior, down twice in the 2nd and ****ing his shoulder up again at the end of that round, he fought 10 rounds with 1 arm the nutter. He still picked up a couple of rounds but was battered for his efforts. I found some amusing punch states. Chaves threw 873 shots, 856 were with his left hand, Morales threw 957. Chavez landed 233 headshots, Morales 284. 1 side of Morales face was completely battered and the other half looked like it hadn’t been touched Chavez, without saying looked a mess all over but Morales had 2 broken hands for his troubles :bbb Carlos Hernandez was his next foe with the winner being promised, but an empty promise it was as Arum set up Morales with Pacquiao (who can blame him). So after winning a close fight with Hernandaz, he was offered a career high pay day to take the re-match with him ($500k) but at the age of 32 and having a hard career the last thing he needed was another brutal fight, the money was much needed but what he really wanted was another World title shot, which Arum couldn’t deliver so in stepped GoldenBoy promotions who got him a shot at Leavander Johnson. Moving up in weight Leavander was easily the biggest man he had faced and the outcome was the worst possible for everyone in the sport of boxing. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFnX2HSNUgo[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O83Foe7Nb0c&feature=related[/ame] After the fight was stopped in the 11th Johnson went back to his changing and was complaining of a headache to his Dad/Trainer and lay down and closed his eyes. His Dad phone an ambulance and Leavander slipped into a coma to which he would never recover from. His family took the pain staking decision to switch off his life support Machine 5 days later. Shortly after Leavanders death his Dad Bill said to Chavez that he wasn’t to blame. He told ‘’El Matador’’ to continue fighting and to be the best champion that he could be. It’s what his son would of wanted. For me the story ends here, Chavez had something missing, despite going on to have 7 more fights against the like of Linares, Katsidis, David Diaz, Humberto Soto and Daniel Jimanez, who he lost his title to. Which no shame in losing to them for a prime, mentally and physically he would of provided a much sterner test. I liken his style to Ricky Hattons abit, Decent footwork setting up his viscous left hook to either head or body, I’ve quite enjoyed watching hi fights and his book is brilliant.
Nice work LP :good I was unaware of the background Chavez had to tell the true. And your right, the corner's decision to pull him out against Mayweather was strange to say the least. Enjoyed that :good
Cheers bud, i did go into abit more detail on his up bringing and prison yestoday but didnt have the heart to do it today:verysad his book is great, defo worth a read, want to try get a few more fights from earlier in his career aswell. he said he was in tears before his debut fight with Woods coz his parents came from chicago to texas to watch him.
Great work LP. Remember watching him as a kid against Floyd and he put up a really spirited and brave display. He fought Katsidis a few years back and gave him a few problems before being stopped on a cut in there lightweight tournament that flopped quicker then a old woman's tits.
LP, dunno how but I've never heard of the Thai....even though he appears to have made multiple defences of the WBC in TWO DIVISIONS :rofl Sums up boxing; the unknown fighter who is a 'two-weight World champ' He hasn't lost since Chavez either! And won a WBC eliminator at 135 five years agoatsch Mental in every way, I'll get some footage of him and get back to ya :good
****ing hell, this Tyson piece is too big. I said I wasn't going to do another Medlrick Taylor, but I get carried away easily. It's only a half aswell, kinda like Dr Mo did on Holy. I'm covering Prime Tyson only in this half (well, the general consensus prime, I think Tyson's peak ended after the Spinks fight personally)
There's got to be another great Mexican for you to have a stab at, surely? Carlos Zarate maybe? (or has that been done?)
yea could do, or i was think Jose Luis Castillo:think think some1 has bagsied Rafa otherwise i would of done him
