Why is it that every buff or skinny white boy at the gym claims they are mma fighters like they think they are talented pros. You don't hear that in boxing and not everyone can claim they can box or is a legit real professional boxer since you need to do a lot to be a pro in the sweet science and it takes a long time to get there. Some comments are "Oh yea i wrested in high school or train mma for weeks or couple months so now I'm an MMA fighter and I could kick anyones ass" LOLZ This is not to bash the UFC/Strikeforce or the sport of MMA. I respect real legit MMA fighters with years of experience, Shamrock brothers/Rutten/current champs and long time veterans. I'll give you an example of some of the stereotypes and examples of wannabe claiming to be MMA badasses like Spencer Pratt from the hills, he is claiming to be some sort of MMA tough guy that can kick anyones ass who mess with him, but do you think he can do the same with boxing and claim he is a pro? I doubt it because he will get scrutinize and see if he is really telling the truth via boxrec and other legit info site etc.. Another example especially here @ ESB, some posters claim they are MMA fighters that will whoop anyone's ass or a pros ass like a thread created here recently claiming they can whoop Vitali Klitschko in a real fight ROTFLMAO. Can you claim and do the same with Boxing? NO because you will get check and see if you are telling the truth.
Out of curiosity, do you mean that every white boy at the gym claims this (buff-to-skinny and everything in between), or that only white boys who are either buff or skinny (and not in average shape) do? In other words, are you saying that this concentrates in the highest and lowest weight divisions?
Not just whites, even minorities. I dunno if you hear the same, but when you go to gyms or bars, you always hear some of them claim to be MMA fighters and they talk smack when you know and history tells us that real fighters will just keep quiet and not claim to be one than loudmouths.
Yep, this is probably true. Actually, it was probably true back in the day, too, except that back then they would have claimed to be "karate masters" or something similar. I wonder if more people bragged about being boxers back in the 1950's, when boxing was a lot bigger. :think
Alas, just another fleeting visit. :-( With that being said, the MMA section seems to have revived a bit since last time I saw it. You and others have done a good job keeping it lively.
MMA gyms are growing rapidly. My town has only had maybe one mma gym, which is no longer open. We have, however, had several boxing clubs over the years. I heard many people refer to themselves as boxers, with little to no official fight history. "I used to be in mma" is probably the new "I used to box."
I would respond to your post, but I cannot get over my stereotypes and assumptions about people who watch the hills
Too many people I know do MMA when in truth they've done 1 martial art and 1 class of something else.
I dont think thats the UFC's fault, i think it is the general ignorant masses whose only knowledge of the sport is UFC.
