Two gritty fighters with unquestionable heart. If these two fought in their prime who do you think would come out on top?
Marciano. Frazier was timable and Rocky would do exactly that. Frazier also was a slow starter and Rocky would exploit this as well, inflicting some damage before Joe would start smokin´. Frazier´s size advantage isn´t really an issue here since he isn´t going to use it. His faster hands wouldn´t help him much either. Frazier´s workout dropped towards the end of FotC, Marciano threw 100 punches in the 15th against Charles. I see a late stoppage for Rocky, he´s just that bit better. Both would probably be ruined afterwards though.
Frazier has more aggression than anything Marciano ever saw........ Frazier's hook was also accurate and wicked.... My guess is, Marciano can't stand the smoke and eats power hooks early, thus, gets waxed by round 5 in a wicked war of attrition.... FRAZIER! MR.BILL
Marciano. Both are slow starters, but Marciano comes out with better two handed power. And while Frazier's stamina is no joke, Marciano's was positively inhuman with him actually getting stronger in the champion rounds. This would go into the late rounds with a Marciano KO.
Frazier any time. He hits too hard for Rocky, who will be backed up against the ropes and beaten savagely. Woller
A battered Frazier would catch Rocky up in the bout's latter stages. Joe's weight would be the crucial deciding factor in this one. What a fight though........!
pretty much in agreeance with what you say - Frazier was easier to hit and could be quite predictable for someone so great whereas Marciano was somebody you really had to look for and was a difficult guy to time properly - Frazier was more a face first fighter whereas Rock was always leaning away to negate anything you were trying to get off and took his time when he was coming in - also most of Marciano's opponents supposedly had a handspeed edge on him but it never really helped any of them and never really showed when they were in there with him - not really sure that Frazier did have any edge in this regard anyway (would probably suggest the opposite myself?) but it wouldn't matter - I think it would come more down to how each reacted to the others heaviest stuff - I can see Frazier Buckling first when it gets into the trenches but really brutal stuff would probably be absorbed by both but Frazier tends to go static when hurt bobbing up and down blindly and loading up really obviously with the hook in retaliation - Marciano was much more shrewd defensively and would capitalize - Marciano with his more two-handed power and more variety would be the winner of a great great fight
A very interesting match up ... Frazier was simply bigger and much faster ... he punched much faster in combinations .. however he fought right into Marciano's strengths , basically chest to chest warfare where Rocky's short arms were highly effective ... both started slow and worked their way up ... I favor Joe as he was a solid twenty pounds heavier and much faster but the early rounds would be just as dangerous for him as for Rocky ... I just don't see Rocky standing up to the sustained punishment of a 1970 Frazier, a far superior fighter to anyone Rocky ever fought ...
Essentially this is a slugger/swarmer versus a pure swarmer. If you're making the argument for Frazier, it has to either be upon pure ability, size or some sort of gob about boxing technique evolution. Because certainly the styles favor The Rock in this boxing game of Rock Paper Fraziers. As for him not being able to take Frazier's power... He certainly had the pure stamina to withstand a lengthy assault, and the chin to take punches from Moore, so...
Frazier would beat Rocky to the punch because he had the quicker hands and much better punching accuracy. Plus, Rocky threw wild looping punches at times that would leave him wide open for Frazier's swift left hook counters to the body and head. Rocky may also find himself cut up bad. His delicate skin may betray him against an accurate banger like Frazier. However, The Rock has a chance here, too. Both men would be bobbing and weaving into each other's punches. The Rock had lethal uppercuts, and either hand could cripple you, especially on the inside (where Frazier would be). The Rock could turn things around with one punch, but my money would be on Joe Frazier.
Frazier would win easily. He was a very very high pressure fighter. Marciano never fought anyone when they were at their prime. He fought a lot of tomato cans.
