I must admit, I also detest lay n pray. I wish they would tweak the rules to make it impossible for someone to lie on top of someone else for the full fight. That isn't fighting, it's preventing a fight and running the clock down in the safest way possible. The sport shouldn't be about that.
would be the simplest way of doing it. i reckon gsp would fight more if he stood to lose a quarter of a mil for lying on someone.
its ****ing despicable i agree, mma is distancing itself further and further from actual streetfighting since it begun and there is a niche in the market now for the old mma like the early UFC 's and pride and id say in around 10 years something new will have come out
GSP actually does pass guard with fluidity and regularity, he just does nothing once he attains dominant positions. Guida, on the other hand, is a classic LnP artist and a disgrace to the sport. I agree wholeheartedly with Popkins, LnP is nothing more than stopping a fight from ever happening and that's irrefutable. If two dudes started scrapping in a bar and one got punched in the face once, took the other guy down, and held him there for fifteen minutes there wouldn't be a single person there that would say, "oh ****, that dude just got his ass kicked!". A lot of this can be attributed to the number of Glass Jaws in the game. Guys with shaky whiskers that know they can be KOed like GSP are going to do everything in their power to avoid it and that often means stifling grappling because top position is the only time one isn't in danger of being starched.
GSP doesn't just take guys down and hold onto them like Guida does. He tries to finish with GNP, as in the Penn fight. People go on and on about how badass Penn is, see GSP GNP him into quitting and don't put two and two together. Guida vs. Pettis was a good example of a guy NOT trying to finish from the top. There should have been a dozen stand ups in that fight.
Penn was the last guy GSP actually tried to beat up and he was a natural LW. GSP doesn't straight LnP because he does razor through dude's guards all the time but once he's in dominant position he doesn't do a ****ing thing with it aside from rubbing some elbows across them or arm punching the body.
Jon Fitch is good for this to. Burry the head in someones chest so they cant move, throw really light punches for points so it doesnt get stood up. No risk = boring win.
