The way he hits the mitts with his uncle seems unconventional. It seems to just be light tapping. And also his uncle seems to tap him on the shoulder sometimes. What is the point of this? Is floyd just trying to get his reflexes down. I'm guessing a lot of it is just choreographed because of aesthetics but im curious as to the advantages of this type of mitt training and if any of you guys have done this. I'm assuming it only works if your trainer/guy holding mitts is really good too!
There's video out there of him explaining what each move or sequence is and what purpose it serves. It makes sense to some extent, and it can create some pretty fast and intense sessions on the pads. It's basically just a series of coreographed reaction drills.
we do pads similar but we dont do light touch, speed punches / power punches. Make it as realistic as possible
I was helping out an armature fighter once and he managed to pick it up in the first session. I was going easy and never throwing the same hand twice so it would never be a punch from the same side but he dint miss a punch.
Um, this proves or disproves nothing apart from the fact it takes a bit of time to learn, as does most things in life. What exactly are you attempting to prove with this challenge?
It's for proprioceptive feel and timing. It's very beneficial, it's probably why Floyd has so much finesse, he can make subtle adjustments from any position.
Barry, how did you learn that method? Is there anything you would recommend in helping us learn it? I think it's great myself, but is it just one of those things you do... Or did you start off with a base, and you eventually just got better?
youtube mayweather mitts and scroll down. video = mayweather mitts 1 someone that boxes at my boxing club. old video, not too impressive but a good boxer.
ye, but doesnt make their system bad, the amazing thing about not only boxing, but any competitive sport is the training. People train so different it actually makes them completely different fighters/athletes which makes the sport entertaining. Barry told me once, if we were to open the Olympic manual and read it word by word then we'd all be boxers, but everyone has their style which suits them and is the way i like things. You can't call any system.
