Solo Boxeo Tecate: Seth Mitchell vs. Hector Ferreyro & Felix Diaz vs. Larry Smith RBR

Round 6

Lots of wrestling. Smith is jabbing for show, with no snap or accuracy. Smith's height and legs are keeping him safe, as is his constant clinching and head-trapping when Diaz gets inside. Diaz pushes Smith against the ropes but can't accomplish much as his head is pushed down. Vik Drakulich breaks them up and it's just what the Diaz ordered. Smith is hammered back to the opposite ropes and scrambles to get his gangly limbs around Diaz's back. Clubbing, partially blocked shots by Diaz down the stretch.

Round 7

Diaz walks through a jab and cracks Smith with a couple of soaring hooks, pressing him back to the ropes. Smith leads with his right and lands it a bit better than his jab, but pays as Diaz has the instinct to reach right past while blinking from the hit and tag him back twice. Smith is using whichever hand is closer in position to his face to absorb some of the impact of the hooks coming in from either side but is still affected by them. Smith is walking forward but not quite applying pressure, just following as Diaz backs up to the ropes before springing forward with his jumping bursts.

Round 8

Diaz blocks about a dozen jabs, then comes forward and grabs Smith by the throat in one glove while reaching up to counter-hold. Smith is flopping forward as Diaz grinds through and winds up sliding past him like wet soap, each missing uppercuts. Diaz eats a short hook but lands a left uppercut while leaning in against Smith. They each have their arms propped against the other man's chest now, shoving and turning in place together. Diaz is landing some blunt shots in there. Smith tries to back out and pop his jab, but is quickly overwhelmed by the head-down overhand assault of Diaz.

Diaz won a unanimous decision.

 

Time for Mayhem Mitchell vs. Ferreyro

 

Round 1

Very nice right hands from Mitchell, driving Ferreyro back a couple of steps with each one. Mitchell is jabbing just enough to set up his power and smashing through, rocking Ferreyro despite the latter's pretty consistent blocking. Vicious body attack by Mitchell. Ferreyro for his part is nodding and grinning at the younger boxer, as though he's willing to take his best shots and see what he's got left. Ferreyro launches a few bottle rockets up and over into the flat of Mitchell's brow but seemed to realize he didn't have a prayer of matching his punch output that late in the round and wasn't taking chances.

Round 2

Double jab sets up the cross for Mitchell. Ferreyro feints an overhand right but actually staggers himself off balance just by doing so. Mitchell snaps his head back with some strong jabs. Relentless pressure by Mitchell, cutting off the ring with nonstop shark-like movement as Ferreyro tries to swim around to his side. Very hard jabs by Mitchell, keeping Ferreyro's head bouncing back and forth. Ferreyro showing some toughness, and is actually loading up on a combo here and there when the ropes threaten to swallow him up as the Scylla to Mitchell's Charybdis. He's just overmatched here, and too slow on the trigger to have a chance in a shootout. His strategy so far - running and waiting for Mitchell to gas - would seem to be his best bet.

Round 3

Hard right to the body by Mitchell. They clinch and Ferreyro starts to rain down some heavy windmills. After Robert Byrd breaks the clinch, Ferreyro goes down to a knee while still heaving and apparently hurt by an earlier body shot. Byrd, instead of applying a ten-count just says "Get up, man :roll:". Ferreyro does so reluctantly and is complaining about either a perceived low blow or rabbit punch (or both). He takes a deep breath and sets back to work, and eats a BIG right hand. Ferreyro is wobbled back to the corner and tapped with a pair of hard shots to his soft body, forcing his hands to drop and setting up another huge right to the jaw. A couple more bombs land and Ferreyro is spun around and hung over the ropes like a slab of meat. Knockdown ruled. Ferreyro beats the count but takes a jab to the face and a flurry to the body. Ferreyro just can't get his bearings as Mitchell hammers away. Ferreyro is doubled over trying to grab and faceplants into Mitchell, who catches him and tosses him back into the line of fire. Mitchell just pulverizes him into a corner with hard uppers until Byrd steps in to save Ferreyro.

 

Terron Grant vs. Alonso Loeza- 4 rounds @ light welterweight

 

Round 1

Loeza is backed up by the line drive jab of Grant. Loeza circles left and gets hooked hard as Grant seems to rev himself up off the jab. Loeza tries to show some preemptive aggression during a Grant lull, and finds the debutant hard to find with his looping shots swept in from crosswinds. Grant is getting clinched around the back of the head but finding spots to land some good right hands in between.

Round 2

Grant has his arms up around his head as a helmet as Loeza chucks his arms around trying to hit or grab the back of it. Nice high jab and right to the body by Grant. Loeza lands an overhand right and staggers Grant! He is cut as well! Grant now boxes moving backward, with Loeza walking him to the ropes and sending out jabs on a dinghy in turbulent waters. Grant is now the one holding Loeza low while trying to avoid jabs and frying pan rights.
