I guess that's more reasonable. I do think he beat Ali and Norton. You can also argue that he beat Dokes, Shavers, and Ocasio too.
Then ofcourse having a run of fights beating foreman ali and norton would have put him as the real champion. His struggles with ocasio don't reflect well on him though even if you think he nicked it but fair enough. These fights are all close and subjective as it is considering one's own scoring of fights is vital imo.
Silly way of looking at it because I could easily argue that since young beat foreman, and I see byrd as a better version of young, byrd could also beat foreman. Of course we'll never know the truth because they fought in different era's but if I said vitali and wlad would both beat young I don't think many would argue. Don't go off speculation, go off what happened in the fights you watched and scored.
Byrd's hand speed may have been better slightly, and by that I mean that he threw more punches, but Young's punch output was rationed more but always well placed and accurate. Young, on the other hand, was far more adept than Byrd defensively..and he had a much better chin.. The difference between Young and Byrd based on this criteria parallels the difference between Pernell Whitaker and Meldrick Taylor. taylor's hands were a bit quicker and he threw more punches but Whitaker was defensively superior and therefore got hit far less. A Wlad Klitschko-Young fight could very possibly have been an embarrassment for Wlad..and there's no way Wlad would have crushed Young like he did Byrd. Same with Vitali..Young would have eluded the big guy and scored enough that it would have been necessary for the judges to screw him over again.
Oh, but speculation is the fuel that drives this forum, and I speculate that Byrd would have never been able to deal with the same type of shot that Foreman drilled Young with...plus, he wasn't as elusive as Young. Most of the hypothetical matchups we discuss here in this forum involve fighters from different eras, so what's new about that? You, sir have the weak argument.
i agree with this but the issue many on the forum (myself included) have with young is that his greatness is SOLELY hypothetical. his record is brutal and it's not just past prime, he lost too much in his prime. he threw fights away too much in his prime. young was hypothetically great but in reality simply wasn't
Byrd fought in the era of greater hws. Young was stopped by Shavers , Byrd was stopped by Ibeabuchi . Byrd stopped Vitali , Young decisioned Foreman in the heat that we know Foreman was ill accustomed to . Young was decisioned by Oswaldo Ocassio twice , Byrd should have lost the decision to McCline (but got a win somehow) but anyway McCline >> Ocassio. Young got a draw with Shavers , Byrd should have at most gotten a draw vs Tua (but again got a win ) and anyway (yet again) Tua >> Shavers. And then Byrd got a draw with Golota and a UD over the 90's' Ocassio in Oquendo. Byrd lost a decision to Wladimir , Young lost decisions to both Ali & Norton . Wladimir >> Norton and is far more dangerous than Ali and considering the punching power & style of either Young or Byrd , it is safe to say that Ali was the much safer opponent . Young had 2 decisions over Lyle , Byrd had his UDs over Ross Puritty , Bert Cooper and Maurice Harris and then Jeff Wooden also . summary : Byrd >> Young . He just doubles Young's resume
You clearly stated it was not a h2h comparison. Why speculate who's better when we have evidence of how each did in their respective era's? My argument is no more weak nor strong than anyone else's. I think it's fairly apparent that byrd was more successful in his era than young was in he's. The measure of success being resume, legacy and skillset. As I said to tommygun. Unless you think young deserved to win his close fights and byrd deserved to lose his, it's not really an issue for me. I also think byrd is more elusive, quicker handspeed and just as strong a chin. His stamina, workrate and accuracy combined with his great reflexes and unique style made him a success. Young's skillset made him a nearly man.
Byrd's chin??? Are you crazy??? You think that if he was half blinded by blood, as Young was in their 1980 match that he could have stood up under a prime Gerry Cooney's onslaught? ****..that alone should make you think a little bit. That was a past prime Young taking it from a prime Cooney without even coming near to going down...and Byrd got destroyed by a cruiserweight Shaun George..decked in both Wlad fights.
