Cortez waved in the fighter to start fighting .. He could have also checked to see how much time is left on the clock which is the job of the out side referee..
Once the Ortiz is dropped the out side ref immediately pick up the count, again cortez looks outside to pick up the count with the outside ref.

had this been a foul the Out side ref would have called, which is his job , to be the eyes and ears of the controlling ref in case he is distracted.

bottom line, Cortez waved both fighters in, to restart the action. If ref thought there was anything else needed to be done he would have ordered both fighters to a neutral corner while sorting out the issue, which never happened.

Is it common in championship fights to hug your opponent after purposely headbutting them....

Tap gloves, fine.... but then the fight is on, PBF did nothing wrong, wasn't even a sucker punch, if the refs says fight, you fight, you don't ****ing attempt to hug, then back off with your hands by your side.... especially after your opponent has his hands up and pushed you back.:patsch

If Ortiz didn't head butt him, this would never had happen.

Imagine the uproar if Ortiz had thrown the punch instead of Floyd. There is your answer, very very unsportsmanlike.

Note that Floyd accepted the hug. Ortiz is still backing out from the hug which indicated a reset. If Floyd doesn't want to honor the hug he should have pushed him back. It was a cheap shot. I think Floyd was just mad with the headbutt and being immature and childish acted poorly. He was putting out a great performance, such a waste.

My 2 cents: Why a does a deliberate headbutt require that you kiss your opponent and hug him twice? You did it, you lost a point now get on with the fight.

If you stand there with you hands down and time is in you deserve to get KOed. And why was Ortiz grinning and smiling like a crackhead after the fight?

Also, wtf was Cortez doing? Usually the ref puts his arms between the fighters pushes them back and then the fight starts again. He deserves a big share of the blame.

So I don't think Floyd is at fault, but he's still an a-hole for going after Merchant like that. None of Merchant's questions were out of line.

Funny how people see things differently.

Ortiz wanted to embrace for the 400th time, Mayweather just nodded at him like "yeah okay, whatever, let's fight", clearly still angry at a very blatant foul by Ortiz, then they back off and bang.

I see where people are coming from, but its being greatly over rated.

Legit legal KO. Perhaps a little cheap, but whatever.

    Come on man.

The only people who cry cheap shot, are blubbing *******s, who have a conspiracy theory for any eventuality.

If you want a less frustrating life, I'd maybe suggest ignoring a load of unemployed, college students, in Malaysia, who don't no squat about boxing, and just stick to reading experts opinions

Any neutral who watched that fight has no complaints. I assure you. I watched it with a bar full of them.

Ortiz head butted the guy. Then not only did he try and hug him once, he did it about 4 times.

Floyd was waiting for the fight to restart, and he had this guy keep grabbing him and kissing him.

If you watch the tape, Floyd went for a quick touch gloves, and wanted to get the fight started. Ortiz kept grabbing him and stalling.

And let's be honest - the rookie got what he deserved. And he learned his lesson

Floyd knew exactly what he was going to do from the time he saw Ortiz coming forward towards Mayweather to touch up or appologize. You could see it in the replays Floyds eyes and body gesture.

Floyd didnt wait till both fighters were set or there was good space between both fighters.Mayweather threw the first left hook with hardly no space inbetween them at all.It was like "ok,lets give a quick hug,Oh no im gonna punch you in the face instead, changed my mind or FOOLED YOU".

Yes Ortiz is wrong for headbutting but he was penalized a point for it.We all know you cant afford to lose a point in any fight let alone a fight with Mayweather Jr across from you.

What Floyd did may have been legal, but it sure wasn't right.

Cortez...First off,how does a reff say "OK lets go" and then takes his eyes off of the fighters for a full 20 seconds? What the hell was he doing when Floyd and Ortiz met for the last time to touch up?.Then Floyd hits Ortiz with a left hook and Cortez doesn't see any of this untill the final right hand landed that eneded the fight. From the time Cortez says "alright lets go" he takes his eyes off of the two fighters untill the final right hand landed.

Mayweather has to know what the result would be for a pro fighter thats hit by a one two by another pro fighter with his hands down. That fighter thats hit 99% of the time will be KO'd.So why would Floyd want to win like that?

IMHO Classless move by Floyd Jr.Thats not how a true champion conducts himself.

The cheap shot/suckerpunch argument is besides the point.

    The point is:
When you've anticipated 3 months to see this fight even though you know who's going to win...
You've watched the 24/7 episodes to get hyped up...
    You've watched the weigh in....
You've talked about this fight countless times with your friends...
You've got a 12 pack of cold ones in front of you...
You've got your friends around you...
This is the one thing you've looked forward to during the whole 9-5 work week...
And it ends with some BS 4th round KO, you can't help but to quietly stand up, get a cigarette and walk out the door.

That's the point. We all knew Ortiz was going to lose. However, boxing fans deserved more that night.
