Clearly he wasn't leagues above selby on the evidence of the fight.

What I don't like is a fighter becoming **** on the back of one loss.

And what is your agenda here? Coming on sternly defending Smith and then harshly calling Selby a "classless ****". Yet I'm the one with the agenda for pointing out a ridiculous comment by Smith that you have agreed is ridiculous.

Selby's celebration was classless. I'll stand by that comment.

No agenda here. I've recognised that selby's performance was great. I was there live and applauded when he received his belts because his performance merited recognition.

Where I'm coming from regarding smith is that he hasn't become **** or a bum overnight. He fought the wrong fight on the night against a strong and highly motivated selby. I'm not defending the performance because he could've done better and I'm sure he knows that.
What I will say for both of them and tge fight in general is that it was a great contest while it lasted, both guys never backed down and showed tremendous strength and courage. The kind of fight the sport is crying out for, even thoughim disappointed with the result.
Selby has arrived though. I'm sure swifty will be back.

 

You know Smith personally and that is a main factor behind your comments.

Smith was hailed as a future world champ etc. After that Selby fight I think you will find very few who think he will ever be anything more than British level. That is what people are making comments about. We have had to hear about Smith becoming world level etc and then he gets sparked clean out at British level. Obviously people are going to then say that Smith is nowhere near becoming world level.

I do agree it was a good fight to watch though.

As for Selbys celebration, Morales, Barerra, Hamed, Tyson, Vitali, Wlad, Pacquiao, Donaire (i could go on) are all fighters who have celebrated over their opponents fallen bodies. The adrenaline is pumping high in the ring and they have trained for months and dreamed about winning these fights their entire lives so its a bit excessive to call them "classless ****s" for being unable to contain themselves when they achieve their lifelong dreams

 

I don't know any of the smiths personally. I've met them and that's as far as it goes.

Look I'm not one of those people who said swifty would be a world champ. I don't think you can say that about almost anybody until they do it. However it was and still is clear that ste has something in him to cone back from this defeat.

I would call anyone classless who dances over an unconscious opponent who could be very badly hurt. And tge guys you mention are guys I admire as fighters. But they lack a bit of class for that reason alone.

 

I see your point. I guess we agree. I like the way you can separate the FIGHTER from the PERSON. Many can't do this. Mayweather is a prime example... unbelievable fighter but people discredit him because they dislike him and allow that to cloud their judgement on him as a fighter

All fighters have a point to prove until they retire. Swifty's point now is to get back in and show he can box and doesn't need to trade tge way he did.

Stepehen was basically exposed as another fighter who thinks he can just walk through punches....well now he knows you cant...Similar to Murray / Mitchell.

 

After a reaction like this to Smith's defeat, is it any wonder that promoters fight tooth and nail to protect their fighter's 0's?

As usual, someone gets beat and they've gone from being a top prospect to 'exposed' 'only ever British level' etc. Written off after one defeat.

He lost to a relatively little known guy who turned out to be way better than anyone expected. I was as shocked as anyone! His tactics were wrong, and I put that down to his trainer who always places great stock in researching his fighters opponents and coming up with games plans. The other slightly concerning thing for me was that once Swifty realised what he was up against, he wasn't able to adjust his tactics mid fight, which is something I would expect someone of his talent to do. He just kept doing the pressure fighter impression, which is not him for me.

Yes he's lost and it was comprehensive. But he's not become a bad fighter overnight and one loss doesn't restrict him to 'just British level'. He can learn from it, he's a bright guy and I'm sure he will come back better from it.

One defeat this early in his career is not the disaster some are making it out to be. It could turn out to be the best thing that happened to him?

 

Yep so he has been exposed at British level until proves otherwise!
