DO people who enjoy Larry Merchant like him because....

Been sick of larry for a long time now. I don't think anybody respects his commentary, they just respect him for the dumb things he says or if he disrespects certain fighters that people may not like.

 

Says you. I thought (as apparently many others did) that no only was it appropriate how merchant reacted, but done with great humor and style.

It's mainly FM nuthuggers who don't like it because fm got owned.

 

Larry Merchant made his bones as a philly fight reporter. to say he hates black fighters is ridiculous. He's a philly boy through and through. All his favorite fighters are Philly fighters, and they're all black.

It's the idiots trying to call Larry a racist who are the real racists.
Merchant had not said a single word of criticism when Mayweather went off. Not a single word.
He knew what he did was a ***** move. He knew ducking Pac was a ***** move. He knew he was probably going to get asked about both, so he did what he does best.
He created a way to avoid a tough challenge.

 

merchant is good at times but he does disrespect alot of fighters especially considering he never fought himself. but the enitre hbo team are bias so...

Pls point out exactly where I said Floyd made Merchant look like a fool, oh wait I didn't. I said he looked like more of a fool than Floyd, who also looked like a jackass.

His job is to be a professional and interview the fighters post fight, not get sucked into a pissing match with them and come off looking like a petulant child when Floyd acted like one himself. Floyd is paid to fight, not answer questions. Larry is paid to ask questions and comment on the fights, not try and act all thug. I don't see how mayweather got owned at all. If merchant sat there and didn't respond emotionally he would have owned floyd who would have looked like a psycho dbag cus larry hadn't even said anything bad yet. Instead he just looked like a crazed old man who lost his cool while on the clock. It's mainly floyd haters that can't see it as being ****ing classless on both sides of the equation.

Disagree. His job is to be professional, as are all jobs in fact, but that doesn't mean you take someone saying you ain't **** yelling all in your face.

Entertainment wise, it was great drama and is why Larry Merchant is very highly respected. He is unique and has a unique take on things, unlike some robot who only asks friendly scripted questions.

The difference is this: Jim Gray does not get to spend the broadcast 'framing' his opinion and then use the Q&A portion to justify it. Jim Gray is not allowed to let his open dislike for a particular fighter or style of fighter be part of the broadcast.

Therefore, even while being an zealous azzhole, Gray's questions come off much more 'neutral'. Compare that to a guy who (for example) called a fighter an 'Artful Dodger' prefight and then needs to cover his azz in the post fight interview after said fighter stood directly in front of the other fighter.

I've said it before and it bears repeating: As a fan, what have you ever learned about boxing or its history from Merchant's commentary? What insight or useful knowledge have you ever received on the fight being broadcast from Merchant?

40 plus years in boxing and yet none of this so-called 'knowledge' is being passed along to us, the fans. Nothing. Just lame jokes and bitterness.

Only a fool plunks down 50+ bucks on ppvs to watch fighters get harangued and insulted by the commentator. It's a dumbazz business model.
