Why did the bell not ring to signal the end of the round?

Joe Cortez says "let's go" with 8 seonds left on the clock and it takes a further 16 seconds before Ortiz is officially counted out. After two seconds of Ortiz being down, the bell should have rang if the timekeeper was told to restart the fight, and the bell did not ring. Regardless of knockdowns or whatever, the bell always rings to signalize the end of a round.

I think it's clear what happened. Cortez saying "Let's go" was not an official command to the timekeeper to restart the fight. If the fight had been restarted, why did the bell not ring and why was Cortez still talking to the timekeeper instead of watching the fight?

If the fight wasn't officially restarted, the result should have been Ortiz by DQ or a TD.

Maybe the timekeeper ****ed up? Happens all the damn time..

He clearly told them to continue fighting with his hands.. not sure what he said.. but signaled them to fight.

The timekeeper is the one who officially starts and stops the action though, so no matter what he says, goes. Think about one of the most farcical events in the history of the sport, Danny Williams vs. Konstanin Airich. in that fight, Airich's promoter illegally rang the bell after just over 90 seconds of the round and yet the round had to end. The referee and fighters must have known it was not a full three minute round and yet both fighters went back to their corners.

My point is...even if the timekeeper did **** up, the bout doesn't seem to have been officially restarted. No matter who is at fault here, if the fight wasn't officially restarted, the punches Mayweather landed were illegal.

Assuming you're right about the time, have you considered a third option -- i.e. that the timekeeper messed up?

Because Cortez's behavior and subsequent remarks all point to his having called the fight back on.

edit: nervousxtian raises the same point before me.

man please stop with this. Was Floyd supposed to look up at the clock or something? If he didn, he would have still seen time on it

the timekeeper trumps the ref when it comes to legality? I don't think so.

The Time keeper messed up, Cortez messed up, Ortiz messed up, Gayweather messed up,Merchant messes up.

That summed it all - messed up.

And the *****s keeps on cleaning up the mess in ESB.

Yeah, he does. The referee just tells the timekeeper what to do but unless he actually does it, then nothing is official. See my point about the Danny Williams fight - The referee and fighters all knew that the round hadn't gone three minutes and yet because the bell had been rung, the round was over and the referee couldn't do anything.

It's the timekeeper who actually stops and starts the fight. The referee just tells him when to do so, but if he misses it, as I think he did, then officially the fight is not on.

Cortez was still talking to the corner after he said "Let's go."

Obviously there was a confusion between him and the timer.

****ing idiot should never officiate a fight again.

Exactly so really you cant blame Floyd for Cortez being a ******... But you really cant say that Ortiz was given a legit Fair shot neither the commissions job is to make sure that they preserve the integrity of the sport and give both fighters a fair shot.

I saw 8 seconds left on my Tivo, However someone posted a picture with 11 I will call it 11 to make the Floyd fan who posted that happy, your still going to hear that bell if time was really in...

    Someone is lying

Bazooka, you STILL don't get it?

What the timekeeper did or didn't do has no bearing on the fight. He's supposed to follow the ref, as are the fighters.

Do you think Ortiz should have looked to the timekeeper, to make sure time was "officially" in before putting up his guard?

Do you think, if Ortiz HAD started to fight, but Floyd still knocked him out, that the timekeeper would have jumped up and demanded a do-over, because he hadn't officially started the clock?

    WTF, man? Let it go.
