I would have him one of the true elites in head to head capabilities as well. He's one 200 lber that I feel could chop down many of the modern super heavyweights. Knocking him down is one thing but keeping him down is another. Whenever he caught up to someone though, they were finished. No second chances against this man.

 

I see your point,but we could go round in circles with this one. We could say if Foreman gets dropped by Lyle.............Tyson gets dropped by Holyfield..........what would Louis do to THEM etc....etc.

What about Tyson , Corrie Sanders , Lennox Lewis , Riddick Bowe , Jimmy Ellis , Floyd Patterson and others that I forgot . Weren't they at least as skilled ? and then James Toney , Orlin Norris , Chris Byrd , Arnold Cream , Ezzard Charles . I think you exaggerated .

 

Louis would be about the same place in my H2H as my actual list. Two or three.

Ali showed me he could adapt and whoop anyone. any style. Louis didnt.

 

Nonsense. Louis beat every style. What type of fighter did he not beat? He had wins over smaller defensive boxers, larger sluggers, several swarming type fighters that worked out of a crouch.... Mostly by knockout as well. And in a rematch he'd do it in half the time or less.

 

And if Ali could get dropped by Cooper, and Tyson beat by Douglas, and Foreman outboxed by Jimmy Young, and and and..

Get over it. Any fighter takes bumps along the way, has subpar performances, or has difficulty with guys who are in the mid level. Every fighter.

 

Douglas could take Tyson's best uppercut, get back up and win. He also kept Tyson at the end of a punishing jab all night. Neither of which Louis could do. Douglas was a journeyman because he only maximized his talents in one fight.

The Foreman who fought Young most likely would have lost to Louis. Each fighter in their prime? In the give and take ratio of power and chin, I clearly favor Foreman.

 

I agree with much of what you say, except in all fairness, Douglas really wasn't a journeyman. He was a rated contender for the better part of some 4 years before facing Tyson and had already challenged for a title prior to their meeting.

 

I agree with your view. Ali is numero uno,without doubt. Louis is definitely the runner up though.

 

Skill per se , I take Louis over Ali , but not over the names that I mentioned myself.

What is Joe Louis gonna do when Tyson slips that jab, throws a right hook to the body and then come up the middle with that uppercut? Mike Tyson would be too much speed and power, not to mention the fact that Louis hated pressure.

And, no, I'm not referring to the lethargic Tyson who was embarrassed by Buster Douglas. I'm talking about the real Mike Tyson from 1985-88. And I'm putting him in the ring with the Joe Louis of the Schmeling rematch. Joe Louis could knock out Liston and Foreman, but he'd have to get to them first. If not, there's no way he survives 15 rounds with murderous punchers like them.
