My point is that Setanta would have done a lot better had they ignored football. If they had focused on the more obscure sports they'd have attracted a niche audience.

The smaller sports (golf, tennis, boxing) actually did better for them in terms of new subscriptions than football did. I remember that Calzaghe-Kessler was their single biggest bump - a boxing event, well promoted across the specialist press and on tabloid sports pages.

But... in fairness, that only worked because Calzaghe had featured on ITV.

Either way, it was a smart model, especially when they started getting high-class international fights from Germany and the US.

Bunce and Kerr back together again?

Good news. That's what I miss most about Setanta

Would they ****. They knew, as Sky know, ESPN know, the terrestrial broadcasters know-Football sells. Like it or not, it is a massive revenue driver, and Setanta wouldn't have lasted as long as they did without Premier League/FA Cup/England internationals. Sure in the end they spent more money on them than they actually had:patsch but they'd have got nowhere without those rights in the first place. For a good year or so they challenged Sky-and the main reason was football, not boxing or golf, or ****** tennis.

Setanta failed because they were funded by a niche branch of Al Qaeda established to indoctrinate the British Judao-Christian sports fans. Once the government discovered this a covert operation was conducted to take them off the airwaves, and out of the minds of the the innocent British youths. The economic failings were just a cover up. They would have got away with it too, if it wasn't for big-mouth Anthony Smalls.
