ok guys this has been really bugging me, what are your views on the officiating in the Khan vs Maidana fight? Alot of people seem to believe that Cortez saved Khan by splitting him and Maidana up every time they clinched for more than a couple of seconds. Personally (yes im a fan of Khan) Maidana landed his bombs on his way in, not whilst actaully on the inside, but coming in. Therefor everytime Cortez split the 2 up, he was giving Maidana the chance to land his bombs everytime he marched forward, therfore giving him the advantage. Also, the whole issue on "Khan was out on his feet in the 10th", yes I agree he near enough was, but Im pretty sure Khan was still moving around the ring and defending himself through out the whole round but without throwing anything back for the majority of that period and thats why it wasnt stopped, Ive seen this happen before and then again ive seen them stopped before, its all part of boxing. What are your views? this spouted up from people calling Cortez corrupt etc etc after the Mayweather vs Ortiz bout. Poll to follow.
Maidana was gassing and couldn't finish him off it's as simple as that, now I have no proof that Joe Cortez didn't inject Maidana with a stamina sapping drug though so I really do hope the WBA look into that.
After Maidana hurt Khan badly in the 10th Cortez broke them apart for no reason. No way of telling if that "saved" Khan or not but it definitely hurt Maidana's chances of finishing him off. Maidana also lost a point in the 5th which wasn't really deserved. Despite those things I think Khan deserved the win, but Cortez definitely harmed Maidana's chances in the fight.
the point was deducted for the clear thowing of the elbow which actually missed Khan and hit Cortez, your telling me Maidana didnt deserve the point deduction!? and please explain how Maidanas chances were hurt by a clinch being split. He didnt land anything big whilst on the inside.
This is pretty spot on for me.Cortez stepping and splitting them in the tenth was ridiculous. He either lets them fight or stops it there and then.He did neither which was a major failure. So, IMO, aye he saved Khan. However, for Khan to come back after that was pretty incredible.
I think he was referring to Cortez stepping in to protect Khan in the tenth. They were not in a clinch.I have no explanation as to why he stepped in at that point.
Amir just rode his luck and yea many a ref would have stopped it. Some wouldn't and cortez didn't hence Amir deserved his win just about. "Yes, Cortez saved the glass jawed fraud" is a bit of an extreme way of putting it but Khan certainly rode his luck in those latter rounds.
Wasn't intentional, and it missed Khan. The fact it hit Cortez shouldn't have cause him to lose a point.
I saw a guy on youtube who said that by breaking them up Cortez was actually doing Maidana a favour, because Maidana was landing his best shots from outside the clinch, this is actually true, when they were holding Maidana hardly landed anything, all his power shots were landed when they were seperated
Absolutely. Had it been any other ref then Khan would have at least went down in the 10th and it would have been a different fight altogether. If you watch the 10th round again there were 2 separate occasions where Khan attempted to hold and was unsuccessful because Maidana punched his way out of it and was lighting up Khan with hard shots. At that point when there was no holding going on, Cortez decides to break the fighters up for no reason and give Khan a much needed breather. I just watched it and this happened twice. Khan looked to be out on his feet and was getting smashed and Cortez breaks them apart for no reason. Cortez ****ed the fight up IMO...
I don't know if Khan would have been KO'd, but he clearly got "in the way" and broke up the fight at essential moments of the fight. If I had been Maidana I would have pushed Cortez out of the way at one point, and if disqualfied let him explain what he was doing inbetween the fighters at that point.
Just rewatched, that fight could have easily been stopped and yes Cortez was a major factor in that not happening. Cortez needs to be retired.
dunno the answer but i just wish this dude would stop rewening all these matches....he either gets too involved not allowing the boxers to fight or he just stands their like a donut doing nothing......
Yes and no. Maidana is a very dirty fighter and he was hitting behind the head a LOT. Cortez had to stop it, but there were times where one hand was free and he was letting Maidana punch inside.
