Who Else Thinks Burns Vs Katsidis Is Mental Matchmaking???

I'm all for fighters working hard to earn their recognition and taking on the best opposition available, but am I alone in thinking this is less calculated risk and more baffling misfire?

Now, with the big announcement we've had today, this fight makes a bit more sense. A marketable fight to convince everyone to purchase BoxNation, as well as setting up a big fight for Kevin Mitchell down the line.

Seriously, how is Burns going to be consistent enough with his movement, jab and offence to keep Katsidis, essentially a Welter on fight night, off of him?

-Katsidis has a solid dig and real spite in his punches. He knows how to cut the ring off well, and even though he has been in some real wars of attrition and has always been hittable (despite him really sharpening up his applicaton post-Casamayor) he still took a shellacking against Guerrero and kept coming.

-Ricky can't maintain range like Guerrero, although is fairly good all-round, with mobility, toughness and workrate. He isn't a sharp puncher either, so will really struggle to gain much respect from Kats. Will he be able to ride out the tough moments? And when Katsidis closes the distance the Martinez fight will seem like a sparring session.

-Despite his herculean effort against Martinez, many seem to forget Burns was caught many times, slowed and backed up and hit a lot despite putting in a real workmanlike effort and winning a competitive, but clear decision due his much classier work. Katsidis is better at everything than Martinez, and is a far more educated pressure fighter. What will Burns show him that say, Escebedo couldn't?

-Is Frank again banking on Katsidis being on the decline? Soundly outpointed by Guerrero last time out and taking clean, accurate shots for the full 36 minute duration, Katsidis struggled to impose his fight on the smart and rangy Guerrero, and again his terrible skin fell apart. Are they hoping Ricky can use his slashing, fast punches to wound Rocky?

For a first fight at Lightweight, this is a big ask. Massive respect for Ricky and his team, but against a big, experienced 135lb veteran, who is levels above anything he has faced before, does anyone else have the feeling that it is a little too soon for this fight to be taking place?

Or, maybe more importantly: didn't Frank learn anything from the Mitchell fight?

What are your thoughts/predictions? Stylistic breakdowns???

Me to Flea, I spoke to HH the other day and said my worries about Ricky in this bout. I re-watched clips from Burns-Martinez and he does things like holding chin high and walking out of trading in straight line. Ricky for all his great display against Martinez never looked 100% safe in the bout even though he won the rounds well he looked always edgy due to the power.

Katsidis i personally believe will love this fight and i think Frank has made same mistake as he did with Mitchell believing this lad's finished. People forget he dropped JMM and held up pretty well under the circumstances and also hurt Guerrero at one point of that fight.

I feel Katsidis wins and wins within 4-5 rounds..

My thoughts are that Frank knows what he is doing.

Unfortunately he doesnt think Burns is the greatest, and probably genuinely not World Level.

    Cashing in :deal

Frank doesnt make the same mistake 3 times against the same fighter without it being calculated.

Out of Earl, Mitchell and Burns I get the feeling that Mitchell was/is the only one Frank banked on :good

    Sorry Billy

Not in the mood for a long post, but he has very little chance of winning.

Lets be honest, its win-win for Fwank, Burns win , massive UK showdown for LW Title, Kats wins, Muchly anticipated rematch to see how good Mitchell is and how he's improved. Smart move by Fwank.

You no what, I wonder if Frank doesnt fancy Burns, and is getting Katsidis over here, as well as keeping Mitchell active ON THE SAME BILL to set up a rematch later down the line.

I agree, can't see how Burns beats him. Katsidis is way too strong and Ricky doesn't have the power to get his respect, or the jab and movement to keep him away.

The winner will probably fight Mitchell, so either fight would be easy enough for Frank to sell.

Could well be true, Katsidis has always felt like London is home and wanted to fight here as the home fighter. He's all that's good about boxing he honors the sport and lives for this sport.

This is going to be a one sided beating would be surprised to see Ricky make it out of the first 4 rounds. Awful style for him to deal with and I don't think he has the tools to keep Kats off him.

It was always a fight that had me scratching my head from the first point it was mooted on here. I just don't like the chances of Burns in there with Kats and I really thought he was better staying at SFW and looking at Broner then Fana- I think he could have won both of them 2 fights and established himself at no.1 in the division.

Katsidis is a much more effective pressure fighter than Martinez was and probably carries a punch as hard, if not harder than him. I was really surprised Guerrero demolished him as he did, mainly because I thought the Ghost to be limited but also because I thought Katsidis would have been able to use his experience at the higher weight to better effect.

That's what I think will happen in this fight too. Though Burns undoubtedly has the skills to land counters in much the same way as Guerrero, the power isn't there to dissuade Katsidis as it eventually did with Guerrero. I could see it becoming a painful night for Burns with maybe a late KO.

I'd be surprised at Frank if he'd made this fight to suit Kevin Mitchell. Him and Burns are up there with his leading lights at the moment so if he were cashing in on Ricky, i'd find it a pretty reckless move. Hopefully not the case, because it would be a real shame on burns who seems a genuine, decent lad
