Floyd beat the number 1 guy at WW a year ago and he was the last real Lineal champ, so if anybody would be it, it would be Floyd. Right now it's vacant though

Cotto wasn't the guy when they fought, Clottey certainly wasn't the guy, and neither was Margarito(who was at 151) So who did he win it from or unify with to get it? Mosley?

Margo never established linearity when he beat Cotto, since Paul Williams who beat him was in the division still at that point. You have to become the undisputed champ of the division to establish linearity.

Now Margo did become #1 after beating Cotto and Mosley took the #1 sport after beating him, which really made the Mayweater vs. Mosley fight a fight of the #1 against the champ.

Yes Manny v. Floyd would be for the lineal WW title.

Ring maybe, I didn't see. But ESPN had Pac over Mosley at WW before he fought Floyd, IIRC. Same with SI.

Likely Vacant due to the first retirement. If we ever get FMJvsPac, then that would be to reestablish the line.

  12. If the retirement was temporary and there is no other case for lineage - I don't see how Floyd isn't still the lineal champ.

Lineage is lineage, the man who beat the man is floyd. And there's no other argument or case for anyone else to be Lineal champ.

Mosley was #1 for defeating Margarito who was #1 at that time. You can't be #1 by defeating #3-#5. You become #1 when you defeat #1. When Mayweather defeated Mosley he became #1 WW even though Pac was #1 P4P. When Mayweather took "vacation" Pac moved up to #1 WW since it was left vacant by Mayweather.

To be the lineal champ you have to either beat the current lineal champ, or if the lineal champ vacates/retires/dies/changes weight, you can establish linearity by having some form of box-off, whether it just be between #1 and #2, or having multiple participants like a tournament (ex. super 6).

Currently The Ring title is closer to the lineal championship than any alphabet title.

Is there a Ring Mag ratings archive anywhere out there other than the annual ones saved by boxrec?

Check out these ratings from early 2010 (pre Pac-Clottey):

    1 Pac
    2 Mosley
    3 Floyd
    4 Cotto
    5 Clottey
    6 Berto
    7 Collazo

Pac/Floyd aside, I just find it amusing that Berto just pretty much waited for the WW division to self destruct to make his claim as #2 in the division.
