You said, Cooney by UD if Tua doesn´t get to him early and Cooney avoids shootouts.

So Holmes to win by the same way over Liston?

I think Tua near his best KO's Cooney.

:eek:ld:eek:ld:eek:ld "Oh, I'm so old. How can my arthritic, 81-year-old shell possibly defeat Ali? I know! Chemically blinding him! No? Okay, I'll just quit, then." Really, Liston should not be mentioned in the same sentence as a warrior like Holmes. :deal

Exactly, I didn´t pick Cooney, I just pointed out what he had to do to win. :hey

But yeah, very similar just that I think Holmes can get into shootouts with Liston and actually can come out on top. Holmes´ was most dangerous when hurt, so if there is a shootout and Liston hurts Holmes it might end with Holmes flooring Liston.

Liston beat all the top heavyweights of his time. at the very least, he is on par with "mr personality" larry holmes.:smoke

I definetely think Holmes is evasive enough to stay out of Liston's way. Larry looked very quick on his feet in the first Shavers fight, and although he back-pedalled alot, his jab was still very strong and was enough to push Shavers back at times.

no respect for Liston, I sweat those ali fights destroyed this guy's legacy!

HYe beat all of the top men during his tenure. All of them! beat them convincingly too!

you guys are judging based on ali's fights which is not right!

 Which just happened to be a washed up light heavyweight leftover of Ingemar Johansson and a bunch of so-so, never-was, also-ran types like glass-jawed Cleveland Williams and then the first prime great fighter he fights embarrasses him even with the advantage of cheating, then fixes his own loss in the rematch! Oo, he's so big and bad. All 6'0 (without the lifts), 215 big pounds of him. And getting his jaw broken by a little light heavyweight journeyman and being the greatest 70+ champion ever...Gooooo Liston! :happy No wonder the majority of the classic forum kiss his ass! He's like the Jimmy Young of his time except he can punch!

I think the Ali fights put Liston back where he belongs, his legends became much bigge than he actually was.. Liston was a great hw but not as great as Holmes.

Holmes is to some extent over rated - at his very best he squeeked by a shopworn Kenny Norton - whereas prime Liston was a dreadnought - Sonny would beast Larry in my opinion - I don't think they'd be a great deal of difference had Tyson ever fought a primetime Larry - obviously Larry was a class heavyweight champ no doubt about it but sorry I'm 80% Liston on this one - Larry would have avoided him like the plague though like he did most others

Actually, there's a rather vocal contingent here who have their noses pretty far up Liston's ass.

    Largely undeserved, I might add.

The top men of Liston's era were utter shite , except Patterson , Chuvalo and Cleroux (Chuvalo and Cleroux were not very good but were more decent opponents than those whom Liston fought) .
Those puny "top men" whom Liston fought proved their fragility against supposedly lesser opponents than Liston and same did Liston himself .
Liston was just far from great , he could only be a champion in the weakest of eras .

I've always liked Holmes in this matchup and am confident picking him...

I will say however, that Liston was one of the few men who's reach and jab could actually rival Holme's, and Larry's soft spot for solid right hands would give Sonny some opportunities here and there... Its very conceivable that Holmes might hit the deck at least once at some point... Still, Holmes' durability, persistance, good jab and footwork is something I'd have to favor..
