:good He's ****in' ace!!!! :huh Don't remember seeing this either! Will have to check this out, love Saddler, one of the dirtiest *******s of all time :deal
Yep, the Pep-Saddler series was always one you'd hear about in the mainstream publications. How violent their fights were, and the styles clash. Saddler is certainly a fighter that grows on you with multiple viewings though. You have to plow through the ugly to get to the appreciation, but it's worth it.
I've heard about his dirty antics. Yet to see them in action though (Blimey, my imaginary 'to watch list' gets bigger and bigger :yep)
I hate my Saddler piece. Whenever I'm bothered I'm gonna HEAVILY edit it, awful compared to my abundantly better(if I may say) Augustus one.
Never seen Marcel-Duran before, only read about it. Great find & another great post Flea. You have contributed more than anyone to this thread.
Cheers:good Young Duran, of course I enjoyed it (no stumpy). Not great quality footage but a fascinating fight until the unusual stoppage. I thought Duran was winning but it was an interesting clash of styles & a fight I'd read about but never thought to try & find.
Glad you enjoyed it, and glad you agree it's a weird stoppage. I never really understood it. Not great footage no, but two great fighters so definitely worth persevering with :good
That's why Duran is one of my favourite boxers of all time. A bit like Dr Jackel and Mr Hyde. On one side we have an agressive come forward fighter with KO power in either hand, and on the other we have someone with insane defensive ability, who could dodge blows while still coming forward with a slight turn on the head. Add them all together, and you have the greatest LW ever, and possibly the greatest all round fighter ever to lace on the gloves. Ps I don't even care if it sounds like I'm homo for him!
To be honest with you Flea, the fight gets overlooked all the time. When people think about Duran they think of Montreal, New Orleans, Hearns, Hagler, Moore and Barkley. But people forget Mercel. At the time, Durab was the underdog. He had only had 15 fights or so aslbd was taking on a very very slick boxer. Personally, i think the fight showed he had a very good chin (Marcel hit him with some bombs early on IIRC). it also showed Duran he couldn't blast all of his opponents away. Sometimes he would need to be the agressive stalker rather than brash slugger he perhaps was. Although he got the stoppage (Marcel wasn't hurt but wasn't throwing back), it perhaps showed him he could relie on his technique and skill rather than just his power. Very good win, and made Duran the fighter he would become IMO
