Terrible advice here before the fight:

"Even if he counters, we don't need to worry because he doesn't hit hard."

How is that bad advice? He knew Victor has only one way to fight and he was going to get the hell countered out of him. If he had gone ahead and said, "well he is going to counter you, and you're going to get a surprise when it comes to how hard Mayweather really hits. He is going to hurt you." Then it would have effected Victor's confidence and made him fight no doubt much more cautiously and in a manner not suited to him, against a much more versatile boxer who would of used those sequence of events to much better effect than Victor.

Think about it. Danny (or who ever said it) did the right thing and made sure Victor went in there like Victor and not Victor-lite.

On a seperate note I thought Joe Santiago was poor and was clearly out of his depth. He shouldn't have been put it that position of responsibility.

Never tell a fighter he doesn't have to worry about eating punches. That's why it was bad advice.

You don't need to say Mayweather can hurt you, but you shouldn't give your fighter a false sense of confidence that he doesn't need to worry about incoming punches. The whole point of boxing is to hit and NOT get hit. It's not HIT and "walk through the other guy's punches." I feel you about giving the kid confidence, but a little fear is a good thing too in the ring. It'll keep you alert.

If your fighter is eating punches, it should make any trainer concerned. It just wasn't sound advice in my view. You should always worry about taking clean punches.

Hatton walked into the Mayweather fight thinking that Floyd couldn't hurt him, we all saw him on 24/7 "I hope he hits me harder than he hits those F'ing pads and bags." He thought he could just walk through whatever Mayweather threw, Graham should of drummed that mentality out of him.

Im still surprised at how fighters and trainers still think Floyd doesnt hit hard. Hes so accurate the damage is multiplied. I would hate to get countered by Mayweather.

And those punches were hurting. That's why Victor was running a lot, and his right eye was bruised and swelling.

I think Danny just realised how open Victor was going to be. Victor even when being touted as the up and coming prospect never struck me as being the sort of fighter who could transition away from what he was doing then to becoming more versatile down the stretch in pretty much any aspect of his game. Years later we are there, he'll eat punches and one thing he will do is lose confidence as hes hit hard as showed by Maidana. Now what Danny did not need was Victor going in there being unsure of how much punishment hes going to take and taking slow from the off. We saw what happened in the fight when Victor sat back at the beginning of the fourth, he didn't get countered he allowed Mayweather onto the offensive with what where very impressive combinations and he broke through and his Victor as hard as was hitting with those counters.

In 24/7 we did see Danny tell Victor to keep his guard up, and I think he really stressed that. I think Danny saw that the best thing for Victor to do was keep a guard up that may very well get broken through but would cuff and take the edge off of the shots. Victor's head movement, footwork, parrying really are not something that shine through in my opinion and that was the best thing for Victor.

Now as for the "you should never have a fighter going into a fight where hes going to be eating shots" I agree with you. If I was a trainer I'd expect a boxer to listen to what I'm teaching him and focus almost solely on something should he really need to improve in a certain area. Some of these guys don't do that though and they still want to fight. I'd like to think I'd send them elsewhere to a trainer who respects that will to fight even if there is a will to add versatility. I think Danny respects Victor's will to fight and noticed what was going to trouble him and did the best with what little he could really get Victor to do. Keep a guard up, take something of those shots hopefully and realise going in that hes going to get hit and too not worry about how hard those shots are too much.

It's not the advice they give 'em; it's the lack of advice

    Most are just cheerleaders.

If the guy could truly hit like fellow counter puncher and killer hitter Bob Fitzsimmons then he could change his "41 have tried, 41 have failed" to "41 have tried, 41 have left on stretchers."
