So if left hook was a sucker punch why not block the right?

I thought Cortez did an appalling job. In another thread I said...

It’s hard to know what the **** he really did. From viewing, his call for them to box was a very feeble one. It wasn’t a clear, convincing command, especially when you consider the fact that as soon as he says it, he completely takes his eyes off the action and starts talking to the time keeper. Now, in a situation like that where a very dirty and dangerous foul has just happened, adrenaline and tempers are at a high, and the risk of retaliation and more fouls can be rapidly increased....why the **** would you not keep a vigilant eye on the two fighters coming back into battle? What if it was someone less professional than Floyd who decided to even the score by illegal means? Not only would Cortez failed to have stopped it, but he wouldn’t have even noticed another foul taking place. The idiot lost control of the whole situation. Inexcusable. Had he been clear with his instructions, we wouldn't have seen such a controversial, and disappointing, ending

:happy You did it Rico, I knew you could!

Sike, all jokes aside this was a good post. Like I said I still think Ortiz gave up (and will always feel this way) but you bring up some good points in this post

Because the majority of the posters (not you) here on ESB that use that line, come out with some of the most nonsensical stuff on a consistent basis.

Oh ok .... I feel you ... I like ESB and a lot of the threads are a good read, but I have to agree on some of the comments on here are ignorant

Ortiz is unstable mentally, I think he has a personality disorder one minute he is pumped, next minuting he is sobbing about his child hood then the next, he is loving and trying to hug and kiss every one....I think mentally he was just not in Fight mode not thinking as his mind was elsewhere.

There you go. I was telling wifey Saturday after the replay that I htink ortiz might be slightly slow. No DISRESPECT to anyone with a mental disability whatsoever, but his interviews and just the way he acts gives me the impression that he is kind of quaky.

His upbringing probaly plays a part in his behvaior as well though

I’ve taken punches to the face, but not in a professional ring. But I don’t need to to know that Vic wasn’t looking for a way out of the fight after only 4 rounds of receiving pot shots. He took far worse punishment in the Berto fight, so it’s a bit far-fetched to suggest he, in a far more meaningful fight that would guarantee a mountain-sized prize, would look for a “way out” as easily as that. He was having more success than any of Floyd’s recent opponents (bar Mosley’s round two), so it doesn’t make sense to throw all of that out of the window in a matter of seconds. It wasn’t a case of him hopelessly hitting thin air, and then letting out his frustrations. He was actually in the midst of an excellent attack which saw him landing 4-5 punches that drove Floyd back. Honestly, when do you ever see Floyd let an opponent land 4-5 punches in just one attack/combination? He was actually doing an ok job. The part where he ****ed up, though, was where he thought he could mix in a few infringements to rough him. He got too greedy. He wasn’t subtle enough (that’s an understatement ) to disguise his tactics.

So, if you’re gonna’ accuse him of being stupid, or not mentally strong enough to remain composed, then yes, I can agree with you. But to say he wanted out, is wrong, in my opinion.

But thats the thing, I think Mayweathe was just as surprised s us that Ortiz didn't get up.

And every fighter (yes pacquiao included) handpicks fighters after they have gotten to an elite level. They (Floyd, Pac, Hopkins, etc...) have earned the right to pick who they choose to fight. a lot of you might dissagree but it's he truth. You think it's a coincedence why Pacman and marquez are fighting their triology 4 to 5 years later? I dont 100% agree with it but I understand it from a business aspect. But the key thing is you have to have made your mark before you can handpick.

Now someone like Bradley, who I am a fan of, hasn't done enough in the sport to pick and choose who he wants to fight and for what amount of money becuase he hasn't reached elite status yet.

Thanks. And I agree totally with the part highlighted. I don't blame Floyd for the sucker punch, but I feel a bit of resentment towards him for ending it the way he did against an opponent that was a cherry-pick to begin with. I know it wasn't his intention to knock him clean out, but still, it happened, and fans have every reason to be unsatisfied with what they paid for.

But the hing is yes Berto was roughing him up more but Floyd was simply dissecting him. It's a difference when you are going toe to toe with someone and they are cactching you with hard shots becuase you are returning them and your adrenaline is pumping. It is another thing where you are getting caught with flush counters and right hand leads an din return are landing at a low percentage. It has to be really frustrating.

also, that flurry on the ropes prior o the headbutt was more of the crowd and Jim lampley hyping it then Ortiz doing real damage. mayweather wa slipping those punches ( 1 or 2 landed) and even smirked at him before the headbutt. and to be fair Ortiz tried to hit him with a sneak shot as Cortez was breaking them up
