Which fighters, throughout history, probably achieved more than you'd expect their skillsets would have allowed? Can you name any fighters who maybe benefited from a weak era? Or maybe had some dodgy decisions go in their favour in title matches, which ultimately led to them having more success than you'd have expected from a fighter of their calibre?

One that jumps to mind for me is John Ruiz. The guy is a 2 time Heavyweight champion of the world, and although not a bad fighter by any means, he certainly doesn't strike me as a championship level competitor. Not that many fighters are 2 time Heavyweight champions of the world, and it could have been even more for Ruiz if the Valuev fight had swung in his favour (which it probably should have). Ruiz is a fairly poor fighter, with limited athletic capabilities, and hardly solid fundamentals. He merely clinches incessantly and fouls like a madman on his way to dirty wins. Not the kind of fighter you expect to have done what he did in terms of achievements.

Who are some other guys that fit the bill? :think

    Of recent years:

    - Carlos Baldomir: win some, lose some kinda guy for most of his career. Suddenly got a good streak going against guys with nice shiny records, then shocked the world (at the time) by dethroning Zab Judah, taking away his welterweight title. Also did a nice job against an admitedly shopworn Arturo Gatti, before losing to Floyd by UD. No speed, no real power, just relentless determination.

    Ricky Hatton.

There are a lot of fighters who have technically over-achieved by being able to call themselves '3 Weight World Champions' or whatnot. They are benefited by the era of course. But I think you're looking for people that have actually over-achieved :good

Baldimor was probably the worst unified champ ever, so I'd plump for him.

Recently, how about Froch? Not a bad fighter. Somewhat limited with low defence and gets hit a lot, yet is a two time SMW world champ, has beaten very good fighters, and could go down as the greatest ever at 168 with wins over Ward, Bute, Kessler and Pascal again.

Hatton. ****ing hell, good shout. Might be the best example of fighters from recent years.

I always sort of thought Maurice Blocker overachieved to a degree, personally. He himself is a 2 time champion with a couple of decent wins (Starling, Mamby, Brown and Garcia - in fact that a fair few good wins) but I've never really rated him much as a fighter, I felt he was fortunate in a couple of those wins. He just never seemed that good to me, personally.

I wouldn't argue if you disagreed with that, however. Maurice had some decent qualities too.

    Clinton Woods
    Gene Fullmer
    Barry Michael

I can't decide whether Silky Jones, Maurice Hope and Alfredo Layne underachieved or overachieved.

Everytime i watch a Clinton Woods fight I cant understand what exactly makes him world class exactly he just has no spectacular attributes at all (apart from an epic chin) yet he was clearly able to operate at a very high level.

I always sit there just :huh
