Joe Calzaghe's 46-0 vs Floyd Mayweather's 42-0

Exatly the revision of Calzaghe carrer can only be from people that wernt there live during the time he was A champion...not THE.

A fighter called Sven Ottke, was champion of a more legit title...never fought him. Alot of people like to say Ottke was protected, soft punching fighter....he too thought remained unbeaten with a record of 34-0. Ottke was champion of the IBF from 1997 to 2004- and WBA champion from 2003 to 2004?

If Joe really wanted to be an all time great surely clearing out your division is of importance?

Holding the WBO title, in the newly fabricated super-middleweight division, a division that has taken years to actually carry a roster of decent fighters isnt impressive.

During the WBO years, he fought the likes of Eubank, Reid (controversial win) and Byron Mitchell. He was down and nearly out for Mitchell before putting Byron on the floor then the ref stopped the fight early. Every other defence, was incredibly poor choice of opponents, R. Woodhall, O. Sheika, C. Brewer were ok.

He then fights J. Lacy, the IBF champion a puncher who had a good physique but as we all know was overhyped. Still it was the best win of Joe carrer, or maybe equal to Eubank. He takes on poor fights again until he wins a hard fought contest with unbeaten M. Kessler...and showed on the night he was the better fighter.

He then fights Hopkins, winning a dull fight and on my car by 1 round. Hopkins puts him down early....a rematch should have happend...its what true all time greats normally do...especially if your Joe and you have a weak resume. You dont leave things to doubt...instead he took on Roy Jones who ends up him down aswell...jones in less than a year gets knockout in 1 round by D. Green.

Then its drops off big time-

After this its even poorer.


He was a legit champion when he beat Lacy in 2006 up until 2008 his retirement.

Before this he held the least respected, and newest created belt in boxing the WBO. Thus this allowed him to retain and rack up the experience.

He was a good fighter but not all time great..

 

If he was a legit all time great..he could easily have fought guys around his weight class.

Rematch B. Hopkins or fight Hopkins earlier?

If he was so good why not try and have 4 more fights, get to 50-0 yeah? Nah more like he knew he was getting by JUST...the more he mixed it with world class, the more i felt he looked average. He mixed it world class on what 5 or 6 occasions? and some of those are shot world class fighters like Jones.

To boot it was a weak division, why not fight at 175...is 7 pounds really that much?

Frazier fought Ali and Foreman who outweighed him by 10 and 20 pounds...

H. Armstrong ventured into higher weight classes.

R. Duran tried it.


Nah Joe weight until the last year of his carrer and chooses Hopkins who is in his 40s...dosent give him the rematch when he was just in a fight where alot of people thought he lost then gives Jones a fight who is shot.


He could easily have a few losses on his record, Reid and Hopkins comes to mind...all the difference was is that the judges went with Joe.

Look at L. Lewis...we all know he won twice against Holyfield but the judges gave it a draw.

We all know Ali lost the 3rd match with Norton.

Anyhow...yeah let pretend he was 46-0, and champion for a decade and no other champion was around...he beat every significant fighter in his division. cough cough..

Joe Calzaghe would beat any ANY version of Bernard Hopkins.

The only middleweight that would beat Joe Calzaghe in my opinion of the past 20 years....

Was..."Roy Jones Junior".

Joe Calzaghe is the best fighter this country has ever produced, just behind Lennox Lewis.

I think Calzaghe may be the better fighter, though, what he did against Jones, Eubank and Lacy was almost inhuman

 

Mayweather for sure. Calzaghe went too many years fighting poor competition. Started on a high vs Eubank and finished on a high vs some good names but the core of his reign was average fighters.

mayweather by quiet a bit, calzaghe has a few good ones but it drops big time, mayweather has far more top level fighter wins, its really a no brainer, both missed out on fighting some names, we know who mayweather avoided and joe missed out on the bhop rematch, johnson and dawson (had he not retired)

 

I'd give it to Floyd as many mentioned, I think Joe had the better single win in Nard but Floyd has a consistent string of almost world class fighters, or world class fighters on the prime or out of there weight division. I bet Joe wishes he was a few years younger and could have been in the Super Six, Joe would in my opinion have smashed it to **** (even against the warrior Froch) and would be held in a lot more high regard than he is now. Floyd without Pacquiao will always be remembered for rightly or wrongly pussying out of the biggest fight of our generation (as will Pacquiao in my eyes but I think most people side with Manny).

 

Let's not forget Pavlik - that would have been a great fight, a great win and look very good on Joe's record if he'd have gotten there before Hopkins.

Wasn't Bute Joe's mandatory before he relinquished the title? I suppose Bute at the time wasn't anybody of significance...
