Personally I can't think of any fighters currently near his weight that would come out on top vs that version of Hopkins. He was really feeling it and in the zone, would have beat anyone in the super six that night imo. Also I doubt he would have lost to Calazaghe, Taylor and Jones.
The fight said as much about Pavlik as Hopkins, I think. But the performance was incredible, at any rate.
his performance against trinidad was better imo but he did surprise the hell out of everyone by how easy he beat pavlik
Pavlik is just a B class fighter at best, Hopkins career post Trinidad has been all smoke and mirrors
I disagree it was more then smoke and mirrors he was a insain beast that night against Pavlik. Rewatch the 12th round at least, the punches he was snapping off were nothing short of amazing.
Hopkins showed what we already knew that he had and that is an incredible sense of distance, timing and ring generalship but what was more impressive is that he really put together a lot of flashy combos of accurate punches, not just one counter punch at a time. Kelly couldn't find room to put out his. And that is what can happen in any Hopkins fight, he can surprise anyone with the least expected strategy, outricking tricky Winky Wright, dominating Tarver and Pavlik, stalking Pascal, he may well do something that Dawson is not expecting to deal with.
Triniada was a much better performance IMO. You've got to take into account the quality of the man Hopkins was facing.
the word in hopkins' camp (come to find out) is that they looked at pavlik and said that if we can't beat him we need to retire. that's how much they thought of kelly despite the media hype.
pavlik should never have been fighting at that weight but credit where its due, was a great performance from hopkins.
That was a good performance also, but I think Oscar already pretty much exsposed Trinidad. And Trinidad was also way out of his weight in that fight.
Pavlik started drinking heavy as soon as he beat Taylor and who can blame him, 99% of people would be doing the same thing. But still he had a lot more left in the tank than the Pavlik that Sergio beat.
