Both your views on how it hurts him with the general boxing community. And how you yourself view it.

For myself I feel that nothing can take away the amazing skill and accomplishments od Duran. But this is a heart and toughness game as well. Anyone one mentions how great Duran was I can't help but have a little part of my brain say "yea but he quit.?.!..?."

    So what say you?

It hurts him as it makes him a quitter and it's not the only time that he quit a professional fight .

The quits allowed him to live to fight another day , sacrificing 2 fights , for the sake of a very long and impressive career .

It is one fight, it is one loss, it is to one of the ultimate fighters in the history of the division, not a mere great fighter but one of the very best that ever breathed, he also beat him.

You know, for years and years it was a Big Massive Deal, and while I think it still takes a sizable bite out of his legacy, I think many people have forgiven it, or at least buried it. It was a poor move on his part, obviously, and I attribute it mainly to his temperament and nothing else. I think it knocks him down 5 spots or so on any ATG list, whereas years ago it might've knocked him back 10-20 notches. That's one way of assessing, anyway.

Quite a bit. The good news is that he proved beyond any doubt that he'd fight through tough situations, even against bigger men, and was virtually fearless. Whatever reason he quit - in an attempt to avoid being embarrassed, frustration, being in poor shape, whatever - it wasn't really out of fear of what might happen to him. It's the most infamous quit job in the sport's history though, and that's a serious black mark.

Probably knocked him down 3-4 places on the ATG list, which considering he's inside the top 10 is huge. But a loss is a loss and this one is particularly horrendous.

not too much.. I think it is the same as Duran losing a UD or being stopped a few rounds later. He quit because he knew he was going to lose..

My point was that there are about 4-5 losses on Duran's record that keep him for the extreme, extreme elite category (ie 1-3 ATG) and this is one of them.

So in that regard all those losses hurt him.

But in this case, the way he lost adds to it, especially if you have an anti-Duran agenda to begin with.

Sort of along the lines of the Rahman loss Lewis suffered.

no question it damaged his reputation but every fighter's reputation has been damamged by losses

look at Roy Jonz, Hagler, Frazier, and other gr8s. ups N downz are a way of life for most boxerz

For anyone who achieved less than Duran it would be the only thing they were remembered for. But Duran is an ATG in the truest sense and it's only a blemish on an otherwise brilliant record.

an excellent great record. No doubt, but a brilliant record in my mind would be beating Benitez and then unifying the 154 title against Hearns and beating Hagler. That is brilliant. Earning the top 1-10 atg spots would warrant beating those guys in my mind, as impossible as it sounds. A guy is not ATG 1-10 without doing something extraordinary. His lightweight competition alone and then beating Ray is not 1-10, unless Ray is rated number one ATG. Yet even there Ray rematched Duran two times and won easily the other times.
