tyson or spinks?

    Yes, but everyone on this thread is using a comparable Holmes as to the reason why Spinks is better.

    A fair point, although I think Holmes was a tad better in 1985 than he was in 1988, and Spinks was at a disadvantage fighting for the first time at heavyweight, while Tyson had head over heals the advantage over Holmes.. Different kettle of fish....

    Still I can see a reasonable argument for Tyson being rated higher, but not by some collosal margin... Both had their strengths... Both dominated a division, both unified a title and both beat respectable opponents... Spinks was the first in his category to win the HW title, and did so by beating a slightly better version of Holmes than Tyson did...Tyson was the youngest in history and had an ora of greater dominance, plus more career fights and the claim to regaining two fragments of the crown... Spinks never lost to a man of Buster Douglas's calibur and won the olympic gold to boot. Its all subjective... I think the real reason people see a wider margin in favor of Tyson, was because of his media explosion, popularity and charisma.. Its hard to over shadow a fighter who had a greater societal impact, regardless of legacy.

    The point was that Williams fought Holmes comparable to Spinks and didnt get the win. Spinks was never a great heavyweight in my opinion. The way Tyson dominated is what separates them.

    I was under the impression that the thread was about comparing their legacies as a whole, and not just what they did at heavyweight.... My bad...

    It wasnt but his accomplisments as a heavy in my opinion dont do enough to put him over Tyson including his LH career as well.

    I can see that.. I just don't think the margin is that wide to be honest when we take collectively everything they did, who they beat, who they lost to, their greatest legacies, etc... But rating Tyson above Spinks is fine IMO...

    for me, tyson did have the bigger impact on the sport, inside and outside the ring, good and bad.
    but, the way i see it, michael spinks was the greater fighter of the two, even though he was blown away by a peak mike tyson.
    spinks was in some close 50-50 fights, with quawi, and larry holmes. gerry cooney was a dangerous fight because of cooney having a massive size and punching power advantage.
    yet spinks always found a way to win (tyson being the one and only exeption).
    whenever tyson found himself up against adversity, he crumbled. he could not find it in himself to turn the fight around. this is why, for me, spinks should be rated higher as an all time great, than mike tyson.

    I still remember all the BS that went into the analysis how Spinx was going to finesse MT and all the people bought into it. I said 5 minutes B4 the fight started "Two rounds at most"

    most people were shocked at the outcome but how could anyone not see it coming?
