[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RzA5f_JQXgU[/ame] The whole interview is interesting (I enjoy Eubank's eccentric ramblings, and he does have some decent things to say during it). This part of the interview struck a chord with me. Didn't expect it from him, not after the Michael Watson thing. Any thoughts?
I always liked Eubank. Didn't really understand all the flak he took early on for calling boxing "barbaric", "exploitation" and "a mug's game for most" etc. He was saying what everyone close to the professional game knew anyway. A lot in the boxing press just couldn't stomach hearing it from a young active fighter.
I think a lot of that related to the way he said those things. No one minds a guy coming out and talking honestly but you have to remember that Eubank adopted an aloof persona and a character that replicated some kind of aristocratic gent. It was great entertainment but some people felt that Eubank thought he was better and more articulate than everyone else. Remember the joint interview he did with Benn when he talked about 'parliamentary protocol' or something like that - that really got up Benn's nose.
Yeah, but I always found his pretensions quite funny, rather than something to inspire hate. He just never irritated me at all. The hate between him and Benn was absolute class. Totally different characters, and both were extreme in their own way. I liked both of them. :good
? I was amazed he went so long before bankruptcy His spending was legendary - concording to New York every weekend on shopping trips, hiring the most expensive rooms at the Royal Grosvenors around the country for months at a time, private-jetting around the country every week for open workout sessions, never wearing the same suit twice, etc etc
He would be seen stopping his truck (the largest in Europe, of course) at petol stations to fill it up before buying a bottle of the most expensive water available to pour a drop of it on his hands, rub his hands together, then throw the rest of the luxury H20 away!
Naah. Pretty poor decision imo. Eubank got shafted. Still he got a few gifts himself in his career and Collins won clearly in the rematch.
