Why does Oscar get little credit for beating Chavez in that 1st fight??

JCC was past prime but not by a lot. good underated win for DLH

 

In comparison, Chavez was a better win for DLH than DLH was for Pac and FLoyd!

 

34 isn't really that far from prime.

 

Much of his career is marred by controversial decisions. A few went his way, a few didn't. They even each other out in my book. I thought he lost against Quartey, Whitaker and Sturm and that he won against Mosley (2nd fight) and Trinidad. The Pac fight was also quite controversial as it was clear that he was winning at the time of the stoppage.

 

In Oscar's case, the difference from him when he fought Forbes/Pac compared to even his Floyd fight was drastic. The speed and his ability to react to punches and get out of the way was gone. His reflex's were shot. Forbes landed more punches on Oscar than I've seen anyone I think, forget about Pac.

 

It was a pretty good win in all honesty. Great fighters past their best are still a force to be reckoned with, even if they aren't in their prime. That being said, his win over Gonzalez was his best 140 win.

I think that version of de la Hoya would beat any 140 version of Chavez if I'm honest, who was a beast at 130 and more so at 135 (de la Hoya would be toast at these weights I think).

 

U can't judge prime simply by the age of a fighter (i.e.- Fernando Vargas)

 

JCSuperstar was past his prime and Oscar was about to enter his and from what I can recall, most people predicted then that the torch would be passed that night and it was.

 

I agree about Sturm. But I saw Quartey and Pernell fight many times and Oscar did just enough to beat both of them. Pernell didn't fight, and Quartey was only up 1 point on my scorecard going into the 12th where Oscar crushed him and earned 2 points with that epic knockdown. I can see the quartey fight being a draw, but considering how close it was going into the 12th and Oscar pulling out all of the stops and coming as close to closing the show as one can, he earned it without a doubt.

 

Quartey chin was something special to withstand that in the 12 round

 

I had Quartey over DLH. Whitaker did everything but fight against DLH.

Those ropes held him up. Ike was pretty much horizontal when Oscar was obliterating him with punches. Props to Ike though for coming forward after that beating. Both of them were dog tired and barely hold their hands up.

 

JC Chavez was down prior to fight Oscar. At 34 with all those wars behind him. He crushed so many fighters and I was not even a JC Chavez, but I respected his skills. Oscar would be bent like French bread if JC Chavez got a hold of him in his prime. Still respect Oscar. JC Chavez at 140 was the Duran of 135 back then. Those two fighting would have been epic (Duran vs JC Chavez).
