Breman, you are way off. The level of skill has plunged, the trainers while the have VCRs the do not have the knowledge to train and the boxers do not fight enough to master the craft. The fall of the Iron curtain has help fill the void left by the decline of the America Empire and helped maintain the talent pool, but do not mistake that for skill. ITS SKILLS THAT PAY THE BILLS.

Guys today are more defensive minded because they really are not as tough. Most of them could not last in the conditions in the 70s and fight more than 2 times a year. A lot of these guys a basically Olympic style boxers without the head gear. Of course there are exceptions to ever rule, but the said fact is boxing is not what once was, and sadly might never reach that level again.

I disagree. I've worked part time at a tennis club for 13 years (California) and just about all I've talked to measured greatness in terms of tournaments and majors won regardless of any era.

when the NY yankees win the world series and are the world champions... they dont share that title with 4 other teams, 3 other interim champion teams and they actually play the 2nd best team to determine it....and that team wont pull out or decide it doesnt make good sense to play them at this point in their career.....
when the undefeated new england patriots were set to play the underdog NY giants in the superbowl....they didnt take a 18 month lay off after the play offs and say who did they beat to get here...they got 4 losses i got none... they played them as scheduled a few weeks later....and didnt wait until 3 years later and say they need to take the test if they want to play us......
boxing is BEYOND broken..and a joke with all the belts, bad refs, corruption, politics....

But if you compare the 80s to the era 40-50 years before that, you can say that boxers got faster, more athletic, and better training methods since those days, right?

Then why are the 1930s-1950s boxers held in higher regard than say the 80s fighters in terms of ATG status? Is it because they had longer careers, fought more often. But aren't they fighting amongst themselves in their own era, the same ones we consider inferior to say the 1980s fighters?

If we are going to belittle today's fighters by saying the quality of fighters in the 1980s were superior, then why do fighters of 1930s-1950s get a pass with this reasoning?

I personally think the 80's had the best fighters.
What helped the fighters from 30-50's is they fought way more often and got more experience from it and they were only 8 divisions with one title. People where forced to fight the best.

Really? I grew up watching Jordan. If you watch NBA Classic on one of the ESPN channels, you'll see that Jordan played in an era where most players were not as athletic as Kobe's era of the mid 90s to the present.

Being from LA and a Lakers fan, I rate Jordan over Kobe for the reason that Jordan has a perfect Finals record of 6-0 while Kobe is 5-2. When Jordan retired the first time, the Pippen led Bulls were exposed to be only a slightly better than .500 team. The Lakers were still a good team without Kobe when he was injured.

That's how big Jordan's impact was on the Bulls. Without Jordan, the Bulls were an average team. With Jordan, they were good enough to set the record for most wins in an NBA season.

Which is not true. Remember Iverson telling wish he could be back on old day, where isolated plays are easy to set up. Also on the time of MJ, there are not many fast tall wing players. In the finals of Bulls vs Suns, you can see the many times the small Kevin Johnson(their wing player) guarding MJ in isolation plays.

I'm sure it's done by forumers like us for other sports. But in boxing, it seems to be done to the extent where even casual fans do it outside of the fanatical internet forums.
