So, this unconscionable mismatch went down last night. :verysad

    Shocking result.

That should never have been sanctioned. Shame on the Bayamon commission. Even with Lopez being on the rebound and theoretically not at 100% due to the psychological damage from suffering his first loss in violent (if "controversial", thanks to a few fools) fashion to Orlando Salido - he is on a higher tier than Oliver could ever reach without the assistance of NASA or Roscosmos. Hell, the bookies knew it. They had Lopez 1/35 to win. 1/35!!!!!!!!

Oliver has always had fast hands, and that is it. He's always been a wide puncher with little power; and he's always had no defense or fluid movement to stand as a buffer in the way of his bad chin. He's not difficult to find or to hurt and is easily discouraged when a) his flashes of speed don't strike fear into an opponent and b) an opponent hits him back. Very poor mental makeup for a fighter. Fast hands is all he ever had going for him, and in boxing that isn't enough. Local club-fighter Castulo Gonzalez was able to stun him a bit and prove a competitive rival in their several meetings. Journeyman Rey Lopez knocked him spark out back in his absolute prime (seeing that live from front row is one of my favorite boxing memories, but as great a moment as it was for Lopez it was still just a journeyman exposing a hype-job). He was a very overrated prospect when undefeated and has never been near world level before or since. With all due respect to trainer Iceman Scully, he should be ashamed for parading this guy out to get mutilated. Never in his life did he belong in the ring with Juan Manuel Lopez. You certainly don't jump directly from 6-rounders against cans with losing records to fighting an angry, clawing-his-way-back-up Juan Manuel ****ing Lopez.

I will say, it was a surprise to see Oliver jump on Lopez like he did at the very beginning. Ballsy/stupid. Oliver could take free whacks all night and not put Lopez away, IMO. Maybe the idea was to get Lopez to freeze up on the ropes and not answer back, hoping that he'd have fresh nightmares of the Salido incident and that the referee would step in due to the lack of response and Oliver's nonstop flurrying. :conf It was worth a shot, I suppose...although there really was no game plan for Oliver to win. He just shouldn't have ever been matched with someone as tough & strong & talented as a JuanMa Lopez.

Fortunately for the "Machine Gun", it ended with merciful brevity. The squirt pistol should be kept far away from anyone in the top 40 for however long he keeps flash-flurrying for cash, though.

 The only time I've heard you mention Lopez's talent or toughness in the positive, and it's to negatively portray an absolutely routine night in the business where a name fighter coming off a loss picks up a lower level guy with a decent record on paper to get his feet wet again.

Once upon a time, I was actually pretty high on Lopez...in the prospect days. :yep (B.B.E)

Are you unacquainted with Oliver? Understandable, if so - he's been all but forgotten about on the national scene since Rey Lopez nipped his rise in the bud on FNF several years back.

Featherweight is riddled with safe, beatable, "decent record" opponents for Lopez to use as a confidence builder. Cruz Carbajal, Dat Nguyen, John Simpson, Victor Terrazas - all fit the bill and would be grateful for the paycheck/"opportunity". None of them sports the crystalline jaw and complete cluster-**** of complimentary deficiencies that make Oliver such an extreme canned hunt for someone like JML.

When you were conked out cold by Rey Lopez (who I like, but...) - you should never, ever be allowed to enter organized combat with Juan Manuel Lopez.

It's like taking Tyson after he lost to Douglas and putting him in with Enzo Maccarinelli or Bob Mirovic. It's EXACTLY like that, actually. :think Completely irresponsible on the part of everyone involved.

Ach, my Libertarian streak for boxing matches does not permit me to sync up with you on this one, my brother. Let the fighters fight. Also, Bob Mirovic is a boxing legend. Have you seen the body shots he took from SNV?

If a man stands up to that...he can stand up to that of a tiny heavyweight in Tyson. :hey Regardless, it's up to them. :bart The people running the prestigious Latino title know what they're doing, my friend.
