The 70's excluded. Which decade do you regard has the next best in the HW division and why?

It could be through great match-ups, talent-wise or just because you prefer a handful of fighters from that time.

I'll do the poll as multiple choice for the indecisive.

I prefer the '90s as a overall decade to the '70s.

    Here's my logic...

    '90-'96 = Great.

    '97-'99 = Good.

    '70-'76 = Great.

    '77-'79 = Poor.

Overall greater heavyweight decade = '90s.

I would suggest the period from 1900 to 1910.

You have a prime Jeffries and a prime Johnson sharing a decade, then you have contenders like Langford and McVea on the way up.

You could be right. I was never able to watch any of those fights on video, so I couldn't rightly judge them. They always put me right to sleep. Especially Johnson. If I can't sleep, I don't count sheep. I put a Johnson tape on.

The 1890s actualy had a lot of talent jostling together.

An ageing and semi retired Sullivan was nominaly champion, but you had Jackson, Corbett, Slavin, and Goddard jostling for supremacy. You also had fighters like Choynski and Fitzsimmons on the way up.

The 60's and 90's are the two i'm torn between for second best era.

I actually believe the 70's is second best with the 90's a close third.

the best era is surely the 30's.

schmelling, sharkey, carnera, baer, braddock, louis what a great era.

    Your logic makes sense.
The 90's was definitely deep talent wise, but in the 70's all the best fights were made and it is rightly regarded as the best era.
I think people always look more kindly on the decade they grew up in.

I remember in the early 90's everyone saying how weak it was. In hindsight it was actually very good IMO. We had Holyfield & Tyson in their primes at the top, then Foreman, Bowe, Mercer, Lewis, Moorer & Morrison coming up. Compared to today it sure was a golden era.

The likes of Gentleman Jim and Big John L. Great fighters from this tough era. It's just a shame there's no footage to judge them.

Definitley in the early 90's it was slated for being weak. A big part of that was the mess the division was in regarding the titles being seperated. With the titles being unified from 88-92, it did end up becoming a mess, especially around the mid 90's.
As the decade wore on it was looked on more kindly. IMO it should now be viewed as one of the best 3 decades.

Probably would've been rated higher had Tyson not gone to prison. Imagine the matchups we'd be talking about today, Tyson v Holyfield, Tyson v Bowe, Tyson v Foreman etc, the mind boggles!
