Andy Lees boxing is beautiful. The balance, the movement, the striking are simply awesome. Classical Steward. He has evolved no doubt. It was clear he was boxing more and he kept that left hand up. He can further improve his defence and he needs to put 2s and 3s together. He has more to give and that is exciting. Lee is now battle tested and battle hardened. I could see him making a run at the title and I would not count him out versus top middleweights and that includes Martinez, Sturm and Super Middleweights like Pavlik. I hope Steward gives him the necessary time.
Stewards style when done right is some of the best boxing to watch. It's clean work, surgical and simply devastating. Hearns, Lewis, Lee as well as many others - when they did it right, the Steward way, you saw a great performance.
Hows it beautiful? He's like an ironing board and he's also reluctant to let his full armory go. Most of the time I'd describe Andy Lee as frustrating rather than beautiful.
The uppercut Lee threw under Veras left hook every so often was a thing of beauty, Ill say that. His punch variety was impressive, I just would have liked to see more commitment to the body work.
Had he let his full armory go and gassed and got in trouble you'd be criticising him saying he fought like an idiot. He had the perfect game plan and did what he had to do to win. He probably could have stopped him but it wasn't worth the risk. His offence definitely is nice to watch. He has excellent technique. It's his defence that needs work.
Not really, its about stepping it up at the right times not going all guns blazing throughout. Which is something Andy Lee has never really done correctly, he'll drift along tentatively too much of the time. I'm talking generally here, rather than about the Vera fight which was an improvement in a lot of senses but I'm still not putting an awful lot of stock into it because Vera is bad and he shouldn't have lost to him in the first place, reversing it doesn't make it anything special all of a sudden.
However I would say his punching mechanics are beautiful when he does put them together, which is too infrequently. I don't think he's really had a 'beautiful' performance though, even McEwan was a come from behind type thing and Vera doesn't merit great credit, it was just a case of job done so achilles praise and putting his name alongside past Steward names is going too far.
true also, its almost like he gets bored or daydreams his way through sometimes, or maybe hes thinking TOO much about his punches. Does no-one think a move up to super middle will suit him? Hes gone from looking lean, tall and athletic, to looking a bit weak, gangly and skinny. Hes very much like a very talented footballer, like nani or someone, who does things that make him look pure class, then goes the other way and does something that makes you fraustrated
Lee when in rythym is great to watch. But he is tentative way too much of the time but then again when he gets involved too much he seems to come out worse more often then not.
He isn't on that level but he has potential to go further. Some work on his defence, he starts putting his shots together, committing to the jab a bit more etc
