Carlos Monzon's resume

His resume certainly can't be faulted. He beat virtually anyone who was anyone between 1970-77.

 

Muddying one's waters does often make them appear deep, to duller folk at least.

 

I read that a lot of the Argentinian newspapers often called shoddy judging.

 

People would be surprised if they saw how Argentinian bouts were officiated in the 60s and early 70s. Very similar to Germany of the early 2000s, possibly even worse. All I can say is if you were fighting an Argentinian in Argentina during that era you better not get dropped, even for a flash knockdown, or you were getting a KO loss on your record.

It was the same for Monzon early in his career when fighting better known Argies in their home town.

 

I wouldn't doubt any of that, despite my high regard for Monzon, Locche and Galindez. In truth, none of these three had any need for protective officiating.

 

Between good and very good.

It's on the level of ali/hagler/whittaker imo.

Not quite duran/leonard/gans but better than morales/mab/jmm

 

So where, for example, did you read he won most of the rounds vs Felipe Cambiero, because i've never read anything that says this was a bad verdict?

This is how I see it. Mozon wasn't very fast or a big puncher. He was a grinder type, but really never beat a great natural middle.

 

They may not have needed it but Bonavena, Monzon, and Locche all benefitted from some pretty ridiculous favortism down there. Locche worse than the rest. I used to be one of Locche's biggest fans, feeling he was another Benitez. Then I got a ton of rare footage on him. Nope, sorry. Talk about a stinker. When he was fighting on home turf he would do nothing except dodge punches, no aggression, no clean punching, just spoiler tactics to make his opponent look bad and survive to get the decision which was already pre-determined. With Bonavena and Monzon they would wobble a guy and the ref would step in and stop it. I can speak to Galindez because I havent seen much of his early footage, but in regards to particularly Locche and Bonavena, and to a lesser extent Monzon (some of whose early, rare footage Ive seen) these guys were getting a shitload of home cooking. Thats not to say they couldnt get results on their own merit (because IMO Bonavena at least performed better AWAY than when he was at home) but when a guy like Monzon has only a handful of fights on the road and has that kind of officiating to rely well, Sven Ottke could fight too but... thats all Im sayin.

 

As Joe Frazier once said...."I can only fight the fighters of my era that they put in front of me".

Monzon beat them all once he got to the top.

 

Popkins, you say here that you rate Monzon's resume as great because of the wins over the likes of Griffith and Valdez, but you mention in the poll that Durans resume is very good. If you don't mind clearing it up for me, I'm just curious as to why you distinguish between Monzon's and Durans respective resumes as being great and very good respectively. Thanks if that's not too much to answer for me mate.

Basically I'm just asking why you deem Monzons resume to be on another level to Durans.
