McCallum imo would be too slow, Graham technically too unsound, low hands against the speed of Leonard isn't the best recipe for success. Kalambay may have done, he is the superior technician of the 2 but Leonard has that speed an athleticism and managed to take the play from 2 of the best technicians in Benitez and Hearns (less so with Hearns) Sorry to disagree with you twice in the same thread bud but I think Leonard and Hearns are excellent MWs. You don't beat a near prime Hagler without being an excellent MW yourself. Hearns beat Leonard, the Hagler slayer weighing in at 160 for a SMW fight. He doesn't have the marquee win at 160 but he took out a few contenders and has excellent wins at 154 and 175, I think it's safe to say he has a ton of ability at 160 too and lost to 2 bad style match ups I do agree with you on this forum being very anti-Leonard mind you
hagler because he wouldnt have made the same mistake of fighting orthadox for the first 5 rounds. hagler 8-4 in rounds scored the first fight many times with scores 115-114 or 115-113 both to leonard
Hagler. My impression was that Ray had put forth the supreme effort and edged the fight. I question whether he could've done better, whereas I am very confident that we didn't see Hagler's best that night. Marvin was way too cautious and would've been less so a second time. And if ever anyone deserved a rematch, it was Hagler. Very arrogant for Ray to come along, steal a title, and not offer a rematch immediately. If Duran had done that to him, he'd have moved to Italy too.
Of the list above I think Nunn and Kalambay have the best chance, especially Nunn. His added height, reach, elusive and southpaw to boot would give Ray a host of problems and if we're talking the Nunn of the Tate fight vs that version of Leonard, I think Nunn would take a UD- that version looked a magnificent fighter, it's a shame he went into his shell somewhat after that night. But why would Ray risk going in a very strong division when there was shitloads to make fighting the Donny Lalonde's of the world and the Seniors Tour taking on a return with Tommy and an obvious walk in the park victory over Duran? He'd already more than proved himself and one of the greatest fighters of the era.
Don't forget, it's Leonard. He makes fighters train too hard/eat too much/agree to a 12-round distance (that they'd previously agreed to anyway). His stock would actually increase on here if he'd lost this biggest fights by agreeing to the 15-round distance, not trying for a knockout when trailing on points or walking off like a big ****ing girl halfway through a world title fight.
Hagler by late ref stoppage over 15 rounds, or 12 round decision. I scored their first fight a 6-6 even Draw... Hagler gave it away by wasting the first 3 rounds trying to outbox Leonard from the orthodox stance & that was a huge mistake which cost him the first 3 rounds, & the decision for the middleweight championship, if you look at the two honest judges cards. Marvin then took 6 of the remaining 9 rounds on my card. In a rematch Hagler would only fight in a southpaw stance, put on maximum pressure, & try his darn hardest to cut off the ring & grind down the dancing Leonard for a late stoppage victory.
But that was in his prime. He wasn't as dynamic in his second career, so I think Graham's speed and movement might be enough to off-set him, but perhaps it wouldn't. Graham was very flawed, as you say. Kalambay was too big, skilled and fast. The only way I can see Leonard winning is catching him cold like Nunn did. For me, McCallum is too sharp as well. When beating Kalambay in the rematch he beat a fighter that was superior to MW Leonard in just about every way except perhaps chin. Hearns just struggled too much at MW. Kinchen, Barkley... Don't think he looked very good against Roldan either. I also think he beat Leonard, but that was a 33-year old SRL who hardly stayed very active. It was an exciting fight, but compare that Toney-McCallum or Kalambay-McCallum skill-wise... Of course, Leonard's win over Hagler is extremely impressive. Hagler does look very poor in that one, though, but perhaps that's down to Leonard more than Hagler's decline. Guess we'll never find out for sure.
It's funny, I think a balance has been found here concerning most fighters, but with Leonard it's not just the trolls losing their minds but also good posters. Not even Ali's extreme mainstream status have bought him nearly as many detractors as Leonard have on here. Curious thing, it is...
