Very interesting matchup! Either fighter, on any given night, capable of being an all-time great or a mediocre journeyman. Both had decent resumes against the best of their respective eras, both willing to take on dangerous opponents with a lot at stake. Both were skilled boxers who could punch and brawl. Assuming a matchup of best Sharkey against best Quarry, I would expect a fight-of-the-year performance for the first three rounds. Both had their best rounds in the early part of a fight. In Quarry's most impressive victories, he established command of the fight early. If he did not establish early mastery he usually faded, as with his second fight with Ali and both Frazier fights. The first three rounds would be fought by each in an effort to establish dominance. I believe Sharkey would begin to dominate by virtue of better ring generalship, and would expect him to win by either unanimous decision or a late round stoppage.
Ray Arcel would pick Sharkey here im sure. Arcel loved Sharkey. Usta bend Larry Holmes ear about how great he was and that you approach him ect.
Jack Sharkey. When Sharkey was 100% he was better than Quarry at 100%... at least IMO. On the way up Sharkey beat the likes of Johnny Risko, George Godfrey, Harry Wills WDQ13, Homer Smith KO7, and Mike McTigue KO12 among others. In 1927 he lost to Jack Dempsey LKOby7. It was a good back and forth fight. Dempsey had landed some lowblows and Sharkey got caught with the knockout blow while complaining to the ref. The crowd was not happy with the ending. Dempsey went on to fight a rematch with HW Champ Tunney. Sharkey beat Young Stribling W10 and Tommy Loughran KO3 in 1929. Sharkey fought for the vacant HW Title vs. Schmeling in 1930 and lost the fight by DQ in round 4 (low blows). It was a strange way for a fighter to win a World Title to say the least. In 1931 he drew with Mickey Walker and beat Primo Carnera, W15 (dropped him in the 4th). In 1932 Sharkey won a rematch vs. Schmeling and the HW Title but some felt that Schmeling deserved the decision. In 1933 Sharkey lost the HW title in a rematch vs. Carnera, LKOby6 (some feel the fight may have been fixed). After the Carnera loss Sharkey went just 2-4-1 (1)... lost once by KO. He was only stopped 4 times in 55 pro fights. He went 38-14-3 (13) overall and 1-2 in HW World Title Fights. I think Sharkey was the better overall fighter. Similar in size to Quarry, Sharkey stood 6' with a 72" reach and was 197-205 Lbs in his HW World Title Fights. He was durable and did not cut easy like Quarry did... this makes him more durable than Quarry (I feel like I need to explain that to some people lol). Sharkey did not have many KO wins but he did stop some good fighters. In decision wins he was able to hurt and/or drop some good fighters as well. He hurt Wills, he dropped a 261 Lb. Carnera, he stopped Loughran, and he hurt Dempsey among others.
Its funny that they remind me of one another mentally...this could go either way depending on what stages of there careers they fought....Sharkey by Decision or Quarry by KO
Sharkey wins it at his best. This is a fight between two guys who could look very good or very bad on any given night. I think Sharkey was the more talented.
That's not how the fight went. Sharkey was winning a one sided fight where he badly hurt dempsey, outboxed him, and was way ahead on the scorecards..before Dempsey sensing defeat, illegally punched Sharkey in the balls before throwing a sucker punch hook. Dempsey should have been DQed. Sharkey DQ 7 Dempsey
I think that's a bit of an exaggeration. No disrespect meant to either fighter. At their best, both were excellent fighters. As for who would win, I would pick Sharkey. At his best he could box really well and frustrate his opponent. To win, Jerry would have to bring his 'slam them, bang them' game into the fight, like he did in the first Frazier fight. But I don't think Jerry could have stopped Sharkey early and he wouldn't have been able to continue this way for very long. he would have to revert to his counter punching game. No doubt, Quarry was a great counter puncher. But Jack Sharkey, on his night, was a cutie who would have frustrated a counter punching Jerry Quarry. Well fought contest where the result would be a UD for Sharkey.
Have you actually watched this fight ? It was far from one sided. After a fast start Dempsey fought Sharkey very tough and was pulling even ... he was beating him terribly to the body. it was a brutal bout ... this talk of a Sharkey dominace and loss by foul is myth ... the films prove it ...
