Some said Sharkey could have been champion if not for Jeffries and Fitzsimmons. What if he was born 6 years later? How would Sharkey's career played out if he fought Hart, O'Brien, Ketchel and Burns? Assume primes, and 20 rounds for the matches.
I understand why you are asking given it is impossible for you to answer based upon your total dismissal of primary sources for the fighters in question. My opinion is based on these sources, and I may be called upon to produce them upon rendering my opinion - at which point you will dismiss or ignore them if they do not correspond with your view prior to posting, based upon previous experience of my interactions with you. Therefore I refuse to make a pick based upon the futility of any interaction, though I'm sure you look forward to interacting with those whose opinion is matched exactly to yours, regardless of the generally perceived reality.
Sharkey beats O'Brien, Burns, and Hart, but gets knocked the **** out by Ketchel. Ketchel hist just as hard as fitzsimmons but had even faster hands and more aggression.
This sounds reasonable. Sharkey was tough customer with clout and speed but of all these Ketchell is on another level, especially given that the gap between middleweight and heavyweight was generally much less back in the day.
Sharkey V. Ketchel would be close I think. Do you see Ketchel getting the better of Sharkey in close and in the clinches?
Doubt it. Sharkey was a strong guy. However, I think Stanley was such an enormous puncher, sharkey's mauling on the inside won't matter when he gets hit flush by Stanley. Stanley was a murderous puncher and finisher, I rate him very highly in that regard. Sharkey is going to walk right into Stanley. He does not have much defense, and his chin was flattened by middleweights fitzsimmons and McCoy. I think a Ketchel knockout is very likely.
Its blatantly obvious why these prospective opponents have been chosen ,they all have one thing in common. Now, what could that be I wonder?:think I think I will follow Matt's lead here and leave, yet another agenda driven thread alone.
Tom Sharkey goes 45 total rounds against Jim Jeffries....but is going to get overpowered and knocked out by scrawny little Stanley Ketchel (who, unlike the shifty McCoy, is going to come straight at him)? There is not a boxer, trainer, gambler or sportswriter who saw both men at their peak who would agree with that assessment. In fact I'd wager they would laugh at the mere suggestion. Sharkey has every single conceivable advantage over Ketchel, including power (how many heavyweight contenders did Ketchel knock out? With a single punch no less?) Sharkey KO1. Maybe KO2 if Ketchel clinches a lot.
Based on what KO victories? Which top HWs did he destroy or show he could even be competitive with? What heavyweight clouts did he take and keep marching forward? Porky Dan Flynn? We saw from Jack Johnson- a fighter with decent power- what happens when Ketchel gets hit by a top heavy. We saw Sharkey go 45 rounds with Jim Jeffries. p4p I would agree with you that Ketchel is the greater fighter. H2H? An absolute mismatch on every level, one I can guarantee you that no promoter or matchmaker would have even made had they fought in the same era. And Ketchel would have wanted none of Sharkey, guaranteed. Sharkey would have tossed him around like a ragdoll and broken him in half.
??? I read and post plenty of primary sources, and have seen film of everyone listed except Hart. By the way did the CBZ ever get back to you on why they felt Johnson vs Johnson was scheduled for 20 rounds? I have asked a few times before. Never saw a reply.
Sharkey might just warant being made favourite over all these oponents individualy, but collectivley he would pick up losses if he fought them.
Then it might be best to dismiss their account and go with the primary sources. The frequency with which CBZ update their lists of lineal champions should tell you all you need to know about how fast they move.
Post the PRIMARY SOURCE THAT PROVES BURNS WAS ILL WHEN HE FACED JOHNSON. POST THE PRIMARY SOURCE THAT PROVES HE ASKED FOR A POSTPONEMENT .
My guess is : Burns might give Sharkey a tough fight. Sharkey smashes Hart, O'Brien and Ketchel to pieces.
